BFM - don't be facetious.

You know very well what I mean. So, are we to just tell our children to cuss up a storm, kick and fight while they play sports?

Anything to win, right?

Anything?

Yup that is exactly what KG did on the court....glad you saw it ::)

BTW..youtube has lots of videos where KG is talking smack and there is one video where he slaps Timmy in the head....that would have been more appropriate to make your point.

Well I think the larger point is that there are things that go beyond "too far" when really you're talking about a debatable area..and TOO FAR when you're talking about a dirty play meant to intentionally and probably severely hurt someone.

In the video above, I thought where the girl punch the other girl in the back, or kinda gave a knee when the girl was down, that's "too far". Let the refs handle that. Even where she pulled the other girl down by her hair. That's "Too Far" as in classless, but still within the realm of "sports".

The tackle where she took out the girl's knee, or a hit in football where you head hunt a defenseless receiver (a receiver in the air), or in basketball where you duck on a dunk or layup attempt, taking a person's legs out from under them. That's TOO FAR and doesn't belong.

But while KG might have gone "too far" and said something classless, he didn't go TOO FAR, unless you consider Charlie V's feelings a valuable commodity.

like that is always lethal." - Evan 'The God' Turner

Not sure if it's already been posted here, but what KG said to CV, (and Doc heard it and confirmed), was that he was "Cancerous to (his) team".

I didn't scan the whole thread to see if it is elsewhere, but here Adrian Wojnarowski's take.  Pretty scathing.  I'm not sure this is going to tarnish KG;s legacy in the popular fandom's mind.

Thanks, Redz. And you're right. But a good read never the less.

Quote
Maurice Lucas had come from a time in the NBA when a man with the act and mouth of Kevin Garnett had to back it up with his fists. He was paid to take on the biggest, strongest player in the sport, protect the superstars. Lucas never walked onto the floor and eyed the most vulnerable and frightened foe. He picked out the biggest bleeping guy, started on him, and no one ever had reason to doubt his ferocity.

Quote
With the way the NBA throws around fines and suspensions, the days when Villanueva could’ve handled the matter on the floor are long gone. This is a truth that’s never been lost on Garnett. Trash talk goes back forever in the NBA, gets deep, personal, and yet this was a different kind of affront. The Pistons are 0-4 and Villanueva has done little to earn the $35 million contract delivered him a year ago. To say Charlie V. should shut up, win a game and stop tweeting, well, that’s a different discussion.

This is about Garnett, as it should’ve been long ago with his bully act. Here’s the thing: There are few more complex characters in the NBA. K.G. is a fantastic teammate, a leader, the hardest-working man in the gymnasium. He cares about winning, cares deeply, and the success his time with the Celtics has brought him has become a precious part of his legacy. He’s so smart, so calculating, that it remains a conundrum why he has always gone to such lengths to be a needlessly vicious bully.

For years, he’s gone after smaller, younger players. He never goes after tough guys. Never. For some reason, he reveled in going out of his way to abuse European players. So many young Euros grew up idolizing him, loved the range of his versatility at 7 feet, only to have images of him shattered with cheap shots and trash talk on the floor.

And possibly also this:

Quote
Villanueva has a condition called alopecia universalis, which results in hair loss. Villanueva always has taken the time to meet and talk with kids who share the condition, and has listened to their stories of getting teased with those kinds of cutting words. Garnett is too old for this, too smart.

After which, Woj pretty much works himself into a self-righteousness lather and loses me.

EDIT - Or if you like prefer the cliffnotes

Whatever happened, KG trash-talking a nobody on a crap team during a 20-pt blowout only adds to his "uber-abrasive frontrunner" reputation.

i've read a lot of articles about this and i think the person i'll believe the most is Doc Rivers.

i didn't see the game but i think what KG said would've been something more along the lines of how CV can't win, and how CV is "a <expletive> cancer motha<expletive>". of course, i could be wrong.

but even then, i think Doc hit it on the head. I think the issue at hand is the fact that this is even an issue to begin with. CV whines on twitter and he calls him out for a fight. Of course, he'd never really challenge him to a fight, coz he's also "fake tough" like almost everyone else in this generation of NBA players. i think whining over twitter is pathetic.

i hope this whole trash-talking issue doesn't become bigger. the league just might start handing out T's for anyone who even begins to trash talk. Next thing you know, fans won't even be able to cheer unless it's a timeout. We'll have the PA announcer saying "Silence please" as someone is on the line to make FT's.

Gotta love that. He praises thuggish behavior and "backing it up with your fists" right before he attacks someone for hurting a player's feelings with trash talk.

Well KG's trashtalk seems to get more and more distastefull as his game detoriates. Way to go KG in a couple a years you will be a trashtalking non factor on the court.

It amazes me how so many are so quick to defend KG that they seem to have trouble seeing that this was wrong.
As far as CV tweeting it, I would disagree with that, but it does not, in any way, take away from the main fact that what KG did was wrong. Calling it trash talk is glorifying it to a level it does not belong in.
And to say everyone does it is just not true at all. To say that is to make every player in the nba look like a dumb jerk. I believe they deserve more respect than this.
It obviously bothered CV, as he tweeted it, so it is not always done in this way, as so many have said.
KG's words were unusually harsh, or maybe they are the usual for him, as he is 'famous' for his trash talk.

It seems to me that you called Delonte West "a crazy" in a blog post a few days ago...how is your name calling, invoking a possible illness, different from what you think Kevin said?

Yes, his play has been terrible this year and he's being outplayed badly by opposing power forwards...

Does anyone actually believe KG had this well written long winded grammatically correct trash talk, that he claims?  I mean come on it just isn't believeable.  I'd buy KG said someting to the effect of "You're a cancer" with the intent in the way KG says in his statement, but no way in hell he said "you are cancerous to your team and the league".  Just not believable as trash talk in the heat of the moment.  And if he said you're a cancer I could see how Charlie V would take offense.

Normally I would say no but it is unlike Doc to come out and lie about this type of stuff.

The thing is, all this self righteousness isn't going to change anything, and probably most posters have said as bad or worse in the heat of battle.  Self-policing is probably more effective than criticizing is.
