Did the Pats just pull the biggest NFL steal or?

Its very likely that Moss ends up back with the Pats on the Vikings dime... and a 3rd round pick!

Moss (a [peeved] off Randy Moss with something to prove), Branch, Tate, Welker + Brady = SUPERBOWL!

Pats are Back!

If by very likely you mean less than 5% chance

I highly doubt teams are gonna drop $3.88 Million when they can wait one day, let the Vikings pay that coin and then negotiate with a FA Randy Moss.

Nobody will put in a waiver claim.

Yeah, I don't see it.  Beyond the fact that he will almost certainly be claimed before the Pats have a chance, I am of the opinion that Belichick has completely moved on.

It would be one thing if the team was struggling, but they have thrived since he left.  I don't think Belichick wants any part of bringing the circus back to town.

I think he gets claimed, but he can refuse to report.  and may force his way to NE.  But thats if he is desperate to come back

I'd be shocked if he's back in New England.  I just don't think it'll happen.  A month ago, the guy was a distraction to the point that the Patriots traded him. A month ago!  I just don't see him back in NE.  He'll play again. but not in a Pats uniform.

I would think a return to Oakland could happen. Raiders are contending for their division title, and could use a WR like Moss.

How would he do that?  Its past the trade deadline.  And if he got cut again, he could just get claimed by yet another team in front of the Pats.

See I look at it like this.

1) the contract: IF someone picks him up off waivers they must pay Moss's full contract, 3.88 million.  For a guy with 18 recs in 8 games?  Very unlikely someone will pick him up off waivers.  If he clears waivers than anyone can negotiate with him...the Pats.

(sorry just addition: if Moss clears waivers the Vikings are stuck with the 3.88 million, and Moss can negotiate with any team for any amount in addition to his Minnesota contract.)

2) Moss as a player:  Did anyone see his press conference yesterday.  If Moss comes to NE, he will be motivated, in my opinion.

On Pro-football talk they speculated he could refuse to report to any team other than the pats and discourage teams from claiming him.

"The notion sounds insane to me, but not to much smarter men. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora says several general managers believe Moss will end up in New England.  For that to happen, he would have to pass all the way through waivers.  (We should know by 4 p.m. ET tomorrow.)

Moss could also refuse to report to any team that claims him off waivers, making it clear he only wants to play for New England."

To me, the $3.88 million is a worthwhile gamble.  Its a drop in the bucket for many of these teams.  Daniel Snyder or Jerry Jones wouldn't think twice of taking a flyer on Moss from a financial standpoint (personnel-wise might be different, though).  Nevermind the exposure and publicity whatever team takes him will get.

He might motivated now but I don't think the Patriots will be.  They've continued their winning ways without him.   Why need him now after knowing they put up with before?

Because he's coming back on our terms, he knows the system, he's highly talented and Branch is injured.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
If nobody claims Moss, there is no reason for the Pats to do so, since they have the best record in the league and will have last dibs at him anyway. If they want him back (somehow), they can definitely have him on the cheap, if he clears waivers. Frankly, I would love him back and it looks like Kraft wouldn't mind having him back either (all the kisses and hugs yesterday).

Well, only if he renegotiates with the Pats.  If they claim him, then he is coming back on his own terms.

I really just don't see it though.  He wants to get paid, and the Pats have moved on.  I think he ends up in Denver.

I'm not suggesting the Pats claim him or negotiate with him, I think he'll be back for the minimum with the Vikings footing the main bill.
