I can't even believe the reactions I'm reading from people... you want to release Delonte or expect him to be released for THIS? Are you kidding me? This stuff happens all the time in pro sports. Competitors clash.

"Release him, Delonte is a nut bag." - Seriously? Not only is he one of our best bench players, but this honestly is nowhere near a good reason to release a player. Bill Walker got face to face with KG in camp too. Hell, KG has punched a teammate at practice.

It happens all the time, it just isn't always available for the media to blow up ("West has had multiple incidents with teammates already" - oh give me a break).

I think Danny and Doc are smart enough to not cut a guy just because he and the 3rd string two-guard got into a little scuffle after tempers flared up at practice.

I disagree.

I think fights in practice happen all the time.  If somebody throws a punch in the heat of the moment, it's all good, just hit showers and cool down.

But it seems like Wafer tried to cool down.  He was getting heated so he left.  He showered. He sat down at his locker.  Then Delonte came and punched him from behind.  I don't think those type of "fights" happen all the time.

In the heat of the moment, no biggie.
Way after the fact, not cool.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

I think the C's bench really needs West, hopefully he can get it together.

Normally, if this was one incident I would agree, but Delonte has a track record of being a malcontent and he has never gotten "it" v. his choice to be a punk.  Plus, with my limited college bball experience, I can say this...if you swing on me in practice, payback is coming...and soon, and it wont be a punch.  So there is also an element of stopping this before anything crazy can happen.

Im wondering how many guys Jordan swung on in practice and he is the most competitive guy ever.

Can we now trade for Rudy Fernandez?

Well, if the sources from the Hoopsworld article are correct and Danny & Doc "have grown tired of the confrontations" and "his confrontationsl ways have grown very old in the lockerroom" then I think the organization has every right to release the guy.

They don't need a major headache on this team right now.  Especially not from a bench player.

I hate to defend Delonte if he is the aggressor. But he hasn't shown anything that indicates being a locker room cancer. He is the ultimate team player. Can't say that about Von. He butted heads with teammates and coaches in the past far too many. And his attitude this year hasn't been great. I'm sure he was the one to provoke West. Based on that history, Von is the common denominator. Von should be released.

Um, yes he has.  The report is that he's been getting into it with teammates.

Yes, this does happen from time to time.  But generally, it doesn't happen with guys on non-guaranteed deals that are currently serving suspensions for gun charges, and in the past few years have missed time for psychological issues.

Delonte was brought back on a contract like this, for precisely this reason.  They were afraid he was too unbalanced.  If he cannot control himself right now, when he is clearly still vulnerable to be cut, what would make them think he will be able to control himself when he returns to the court?

It sounds like some folks are confusing the video (which is from the first report of a dust-up) with the news coming out today that there was a fist-fight.

the video was from a 2-on-2 game, the fight after a 3-on-3 game.

celtics wouldn't release West for barkin' at Wafer as he does in the video, but if punches *were* thrown then that's a whole different ballgame unfortunately.

all that said, i'm waiting till after someone otehr than Hoopsworld reports on the story. I'm not a fan of their reporting --- often their "articles" have errors of fact or faulty opinions.

Complete story on hoopsworld, it looks like Delonte instigated it from start to finish...

Quote
Less than one week after tempers flared during a two-on-two game in practice, Delonte West and Von Wafer had another altercation earlier this afternoon.

During a three-on-three game with Avery Bradley, Luke Harangody, Semih Erden and assistant coach Tyronn Lue, West began fouling Wafer each time the reserve guard touched the ball. West was increasingly physical to the point that Wafer exited to the locker room midway through the game. As he walked away, West barked obscenities and taunted Wafer.

After Wafer had showered and sat down at his locker, West approached from behind and threw a punch. Wafer didn't see the punch coming but quickly got off of the ground and connected on two punches of his own. He then wrestled West to the ground before being separated by the team's veterans.

Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce were very unhappy with the incident, especially since it occurred just hours before a game. Doc Rivers met with the players and tried smooth things over shortly after.

Sources close to the situation say that the Danny Ainge and the Celtics have grown tired of West's confrontations with teammates and are considering releasing the point guard. West is on a non-guaranteed contract and his distractions could result in that deal being terminated.

West has gotten into skirmishes with multiple teammates this season and his confrontational ways have grown old very quickly in the locker room. He is currently serving a ten-game suspension after pleading guilty to weapons charges in July.

Did he? My guess is that if Wafer didn't make a comment about Delonte's medication, this wouldn't have happened.

I'll understand if they release him, but I hope they can get it under control. West's skillset along with Nate would be a very nice second unit.

Stuff like that always gets released, but only when something happens. If Delonte doesn't ever punch Wafer, we never hear a single word about him angering other teammates or being confrontational. Yet, now once this one thing happens, all of the reports suggest that he has been on everyone's bad side all along rah rah. I really don't buy it.

I don't need this distraction. Why could they not keep this under wraps?

Cut him.

He's on a non-guaranteed contract and we've got plenty of guards. We all know Delonte is a very capable ball player, but the man's got issues. We don't need to be dealing with these type of distractions and it's definitely not good for chemistry.

Two reasons, Wafer might have leaked it or his camp might have.

Another possibility, the C's could be leaking it in an attempt to make West realize that he's close to the door.
