Baby Complaining

I really wonder if he thinks he is good enough to start on a championship team? Hopefully he realizes what he is. A really good bench player that is undersized and consistently gets his shots blocked under the basket. He's a cleanup man nothing more and nothing less.

With the additions of Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal, the Celtics boast one of the deepest front courts in the NBA, and once again Davis is relegated further down the bench.

For the fourth year forward-center, it's getting a little old.

"It's difficult," Davis said. "Because as a player you kind of don't understand where they're going, or how they're going, or what are they doing? No matter what I do - you know, I can play great - it's still not enough."

It seems as though Davis, who has always shown a lot of emotion on and off the court, takes the last two seasons' signings of Rasheed Wallace, and the O'Neal's personal.

"Coming into my second year, I did a really good job as far as becoming a better player," Davis said. "But it wasn't good enough for our team, so they went and got Rasheed Wallace. And I had to adjust again. Rasheed was more of the perimeter guy. I had to be more of the low block guy."

"You know I go from popping, hitting big shots to rolling to the basket a lot. That's what I needed to do for the team and that's what I did. Now this year we got fives [centers Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal], so I just have to know what my role is again this year."



What Davis fails to see is that his role on this team is quite defined actually: He's an energy guy. He does everything pretty well, and he does it with great energy and enthusiasm. What he isn't is a starter, although he'd like his role to be defined like the starters' roles on this team are.

"You want to know who you are on this team," Davis said. "[Rajon] Rondo knows he's the point guard. He's not going to go out there and try to score a thousand buckets. Ray [Allen] knows he's the shooter. Paul [Pierce] knows he's the three [small forward] guy. KG [Kevin Garnett], Perk [Kendrick Perkins], they all know their role. Their role has never changed since they've been on this team. My role has changed every year. So I just have to adjust again."

If Davis is going to play on contending teams for the rest of his career, he should get used to his role being defined as, well, undefined. Davis can't understand that his versatility and ability to play multiple positions multiple ways is something to be proud of. He will always be a superb player coming off the bench, but can he continue to accept that role?

This is a contract year for Davis, so it would make sense for him to want to see the court more. It is, after all, a business, and Davis didn't cash in the way he hoped he would prior to last season. That being said, he's not putting his own personal agenda ahead of the teams. So far, Davis has done pretty much all that has been asked of him, and claims that when he does in fact find his role on this year's team, he will accept it fully.

"The role that I would prefer to play is the role that they want me to play," Davis said. "If I have to pop, I'll pop. If I have to roll, I'll roll. Whatever I have to do I'm going to do it. That's what it's all about."

"Sacrificing yourself; sacrifice who you are for the greater good of the team. That's what I learned by playing with Doc and playing with all these veterans. I have to sacrifice myself in order to be a part of this team and I'm willing to do that."

   I'm saying, at least a productive player like Randy Moss should get flak for comments or articles before Pats season kicks off. I thought for even Randy it was poor taste, now Baby can't even wait til Camp ends to find out what his role will shape out to? Media Day was all feel good, as everybody was back, but nah, one player voiced his concern about his role(his contract status) and his development. Remember his 1st complaints were about getting minutes when Powe was helping this team in 07-08. Then he had a problem being regulated behind KG & Wallace before last season, due to his 09' starts. I don't count the last quotes about accepting his role, please.

I'm pretty sure I can tell the difference between two players on this team. Questioning that to me is a pretty big insult. I take this team pretty seriously hence the name. So if you were being light hearted my apologies. But to me that's an insult and kind of like talking down to me. Just my opinion though. Go Celtics!

Its always your opinion, why would we think its someone else's? And if you're going to qualify and apology, why offer it?

Taking the Celtics seriously doesn't mean you should take every post on Celticsblog seriously.

And not for nothing " Hooligan" means a tough and aggressive youth. It has nothing to do with taking something seriously.

I don’t think he said anything that wasn’t true. Davis is going to go back being a popper as opposed to a roller, and his role isn’t going to be any bigger than before.

That being said, he’s the 4th Big. It’s not like he’s going to be banished to the bench here. BBD will see playing time early and often.

Doc Rivers didn’t take too well to Glen Davis’ remarks from Media Day.

Big Baby seemed a bit upset that he didn’t know what the team specifically want from him this season.

“I’m not even worried about Glen Davis,” Rivers said today after the first practice of training camp. “I think he’s living up to his (nickname) again. Somebody just told me, and I’m not that concerned.

“If Baby doesn’t know his role by now, he’s going to be sitting down a lot. I just leave it simple. I just move on. I told him before, his role is the same as it’s been for three years. I think he likes us talking about it. That’s Glen.”

Danny Ainge, however, sees Davis’ uncertainty as a positive, in that it means he is a versatile talent.

I think Doc said it best. Big Baby has that nickname for a reason and it's not just because he's big and has a cherub face. He's an emotional guy, he got the nickname because he used to cry alot.

But his emotions drive him. AND, he's a talker on top of it...

It can get get him in trouble sometimes, but it's also what makes him a good teammate and an emotional energetic player.

It is what it is.

Big Baby will always talk and complain and he will always then go out and put his heart on the court for you as a coach and as your teammate.

No one's perfect. I['ve heard Rondo can be hard to get along with to...( understatement of the year...)

Not worried at. Baby will find his place and if he's done his work thsi off season he could see a career high in minutes played as well, helping keep all the vets rested.

Yeah, like I said my gut thought was that you just mixed up the names in your head. I do that all the time. I've called my dog by my gf's name, and vice versa. It is embarrassing but funny.

Not that it's my business, but I LOL'd thinking of what would happen if you had that name mixup while in bed with her.  It'd definitely create an awkward situation, to say the least  

If this thread by Jevi goes to 20+ pages (like the last Davis thread), I might have to take a sabatical from here hehe.

How is anyone surprised anymore by Davis???  He does this EVERY year, except at least this year his immaturity won't be costing him 30 games or so (although there is still time for him to break a limb if he chooses).

The guy must be clueless if he doesn't know why Jermaine O'Neal or Shaq were brought in to play in front of him.

Enough, guys.  Please stop the bickering.  Let's start the season off right, by focusing on what's important (the team) and letting the less important stuff go (e.g., perceived slights).
