Here's a comparison between last year's draft and this one:

Last year:  42 Finals votes, 29 WCF votes, 27 ECF votes

This year:  11 Finals votes, 14 WCF votes, 14 WCF votes

It's all well and good to be dignified, or whatever word we want to use, but we saw less than half the turnout we did last year, and approximately 30% of the turnout in the Finals.

As a participant, I was very disappointed that only 14 people bothered to weigh in in the WCF.  It's a lot easier to understand a loss when 15 - 20 people are telling you your team is inferior, rather than 6 or 8.  Also, when there are 42 votes, a couple of biased voters don't make a huge difference.  With 11 or 14, they certainly do, and can tilt the entire result.

My thought, then, is that we should do what we can to increase voting.  If that means a public thread, then what's the harm?

I think part of the low turnout this year was due to the delayed timing of things.  If we go back to the July/Aug schedule of years past and have this thing wrapped up before Labor Day, I think we'll have more activity again.

The experience of losing the Finals just sorta knocked the wind out of everyone's sails and caused the ball to get rolling later than usual this year.

I think that's part of it, and I think it's best to get this thing wrapped up before Labor Day.

That said, are people inherently more busy during the autumn than they are the summer?  Could GMs really not make it to a computer for 30 seconds to vote once in a 24 hour period?

I think it's more than just the timing.

I honestly think this was probably part of it.  People may say that they hate the marketing, but I think it's pretty clear that interest and passion was way down this year.  I think one of the things that drew in voters last year was some of the drama and trash talk, for better or for worse.

Of course, I'm not sure what you do with that.  However, I think it's clear that a "kinder, gentler" draft is bad for business.

Well, I know that last year's dramas peeved off a lot of people and rubbed many the wrong way.

I'm a big believer in what Dons is saying here. I think next year keep it private but move the draft back farther into the summer. If it's still low, go public back to public balloting. It just seems if the draft gets moved and goes public you'll never know which was a bigger problem.

To me, it just seemed like things died after Labor Day. I know we have several students and teachers involved with the draft and my business gets hectic after the summer is over. Some other industries and businesses can get that way too.

Sure they did, to some extent.  However, much like a train wreck, people couldn't look away, and the draft kept their interest.

My guess is that if people were being honest the majority would say that they'd prefer an unpredictable draft with lots of arguments to a peaceful draft that goes according to chalk.

Right...unless people got sick of what they saw last year and decided not to come back, or uniformly decided that we're all idiots for getting so worked up about what amounts to a monthlong fantasy league without any of the NBA watching fun.

EDIT: What Dons said, too.
CB Draft Bucks: Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Tobias Harris, Zach LaVine, Aaron Afflalo, Jeff Green, Donatas Motiejunas, Jarrett Jack, Frank Kaminsky, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee, Shane Larkin, Nick Young

DKC Bucks. Also terrible.

If people got sick of what they saw, I would imagine that voter turnout would have lessened as time went on, rather than increased.

It's a moot point, of course, because nobody is ever going to advocate bickering.  However, it defies common sense -- based upon what we know of the American public -- to think that drama had only a negative effect on turnout.  Everybody loves a good show, and this year, the showmanship was muted.
