Harangody vs. Erden will come down to who picks up the NBA game the quickest.  I wouldn't be surprised if they both went to the D-League this year at times, though perhaps not at the same time.

My money's on Gody.  If he can hit 3s, he offers a dimension that none of our other big men can.  Doc has also shown more willingness to play undersized bigs who can contribute right away (Gomes, Powe, Baby) than raw 7-footers (basically just POB). Besides, we really go 4 deep in centers (JO, Shaq, Baby, Erden), even without Perk, as Baby has ample experience manning the 5 for us. And Erden is probably behind Baby as an emergency 5.

Until he gets some NBA seasoning, Erden is likely to be a poor man's Mikki Moore (light feet, good size, but bad habits, weak frame).

Ballin obviously doesn't watch the games.

Nice rebuttal. Make a personal attack with no basis and then fail to address the point I made... I'm gonna have to write that one down.

My turn: eeyore obviously doesn't know anything about basketball.

Man, if saying "so and so doesn't watch the games" counts as a personal attack then this blogs skin just got absurdly thinner.

My cash would be on Gody, too, but I'd be betting that he'll pick up American-style NBA ball faster than Erden, not that Doc will play (or dress) him over Erden because of a difference in special skill.  7' with lateral quickness (which Erden has) is a powerful weapon in the NBA, too.  It's a huge, huge part of why KG is such a special player.  Erden might end up better at PF in the NBA than at C, which is fine (so long as someone figures that out sooner rather than later).

Not sure why Semih Erden wanted to come here when he could be earning a lot more cash and starting for a top level Euro team.

With Perk out, only 2 players won't be suiting up.  Figure Bradley and Erden for that honor.  I'm pretty confident Gody will outplay Erden in camp to get 12th man until Perk is healthy.

One other item in Gody's favor, C's have JO, Shaq and BBD that can play center whereas Gody can play power 3 or quick 4 if need be which isn't exactly a role filled by anyone else on the roster.

I don't know. The way to impress Doc is defensively. I have my doubt about Gody on that end. Undersized @ 4 and is slow @ 3. If the language barrier doesn't hinder Semih learning curve, Otherwise Semih is a solid defender right now. We will see
agreed Doc is impressed by D but he's also impressed by hustle, effort and BBIQ which Gody has going for him. Pretty sure if they carry 12 to start the year, Gody is 12th man.

If you really believe that, then I'd at least give him a chance to make our active roster. But from the looks from everyone else in this topic, they'd probably think you're being too optimistic of Erden even in that light.

I, personally, will at least give him the chance to succeed as opposed to assuming he'll fail.

I'd also like to know how a 60th pick from a year or two ago is suddenly a bust now, even though he just received a NBA contract this summer after playing a couple of years in Europe. I don't think that happens that often, but that's just me.  :D

I think Erden will be active and on the bench.  Until Perk is back, the only real center we have is Shaq.  Jerm and Baby can fill in and will over Erden but neither is really a center.  With injury and foul trouble, it would be nice to have a real big available (although he has to be able to play obviously not just be tall).

Luke H may be the next Ryan Gomes but do we really need another Ryan Gomes on this team?  I think if Erden can't play well enough to even get on the court, then he gets cut and we pick up another center from the FA scrap heap.

I also think development is a consideration but I think Luke would get more out of the D League than Erden.  7-Footers just don't seem to get much out of being in the D League.  If Erden isn't good enough to be on the court after pre-season, is it really worth it for him to be on the roster and sent to Portland?  Doesn't seem so to me.

I agree with your criticism of D-League.  I think its because the emphasis is more on run-n-gun, like in the summer league.  Great for wings, not great for awkward big men.

I wouldn't call him solid. He got eaten up by Scortianides against greece, and the NBA centers will be bigger and much more talented. Doc also says often that we need more shooting, which Gody has. Gody also has a ton of toughness.

Wrong! Baby ShaQ (Sofoklis Schortsanitis) was having his way with Asik (Bulls Center) then Semih came and put an end to that. How many power Centers you know off currently? Not a lot of talent in that position right now. Semih should be able to make easier transition with his experience overseas.

Gody on the other hand will have tougher competition at his perspective positions. Whether its @ SF or PF. Chris Bosh,  Amar'e Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, Rudy Gay, Lebron James, Gerald Wallace, Rashard Lewis, Andre Iguodala............ Can he compete with those guys?

The mistake being made is thinking that Erden is a center just because he's 7' and plays that spot in Europe.  That translates to PF in the NBA, and I think, with his defense (footwork and length), he'll be the guy who can play against Dirk, Bosh, and Rashard without them shooting jumpers over him all night.  At C, he might be the best guy we have to defend other FIBA guys that sometimes kill us like Bogut.  What will be interesting will be seeing what he can do against guys like Horford and Amare...
