Also, based upon the timing, I wonder if Danny *was* involved in discussions related to the trade.  It wouldn't surprise me if Danny only bought Rasheed out when his role in this trade fell through.

(Total speculation on my part.)

I'm going to side with the OP that this was a salary dump and logjam free-up, but I don't believe Ainge was asleep at the wheel. Most likely, Danny was hesitant to commit to a player beyond 2012... Which I don't agree with.

Courtney Lee isn't a bad player, by any stretch.  There's no evidence that we could have gotten Ariza in a straight salary dump.  Even if he were, I think Danny craves long-term financial flexibility, and wouldn't want to take on Ariza's deal.
Yeah. Danny seems to be avoiding panic moves. Imagine our feelings if we got Ariza, get knocked out in second round, and then are stuck with an inflated contract down the line keeping us from getting a top free agent we covet.

No need for disclaimer. The entire thread is speculation.

Courtney Lee is good and filled a need for Houston. They had a glut of sf's and had questionable backups at the 2.

Contract does not fit into Celtics long term plans...pretty much that simple. Ariza is a very average player. Locking average players up for 7 mill for the next 4 years does not make sense.

Not to say it's great value, but Ariza isn't inflated. According to most on CB, every non all-star that has a 3 year contract or more and making over $5 million per, has a "terrible contract"... He's a good defensive player that the Celtics will be able to trade well before 2012's off-season if they need to.

Sheed and a 1st rounder for Ariza all day long, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah we didn't have anything to offer for Ariza that fit Houston's needs.

We'd have had to take back some bad salary or contribute something to another team.

i highly doubt ainge didn't look into any of these players. fact is, we didn't really have much to offer - sheed's contract was less valuable this offseason than most. while i do think ariza's deal is pretty long, if he could have been had for sheed's contract and a pick, i'm sure we would have pulled the trigger. there were good players involved in this trade, so i don't know why anybody thinks we blew it - we just didn't have much to offer. now, i'd be interested in posey if he gets bought out (as is speculated).

Ariza's contract was too long.

Hes only 24,25...6 years? who cares. He fits in to what we need now and would have had plenty of time to slide over into a starting role.

If Ainge wasn't going to overpay to try and outbid Memphis for the services of Tony Allen, he's not going to want Ariza.

Ariza's contract is the sort that bad GMs sign a lot of.  I don't think Ainge should take on this sort of player unless he projects the guy to be a future All-Star.

Ainge shouldn't take on an MLE contract unless the player is a future all-star?

Ariza is a fine player in the right role and a great fit with Rondo. Shame we didn't have the pieces to get him.

I think Danny was involved in alternatives to this trade.  Houston was known to want luxury tax relief, making them a team that might want Sheed's contract.  They found a deal in which they actually got back a player they like in Courtney Lee.  The Celtics really can't give them a better offer.

New Orleans wanted out from under Posey's horrible contract, but they wanted talent back, as well, to hopefully make Chris Paul less disgruntled.

Indiana was looking for a point guard, so the deal probably began as Indiana asking about Collison and the teams looking for additional trade partners to make salaries work out.  Possibly, Ainge was looking at Mike Dunleavy as a 3 off the bench, which would require Sheed plus Baby and maybe some other things.  Perhaps no team wanted Glen Davis.

New Jersey was looking to rent out cap space.  They got Troy Murphy.  Ainge may have been talking to New Jersey about using their cap space to get an exemption, but he would have to offer them something more useful than Troy Murphy.  That also possibly gives you an idea of what other teams with cap space, like Minnesota, want in exchange for a trade exemption.

I believe we had the pieces and Ainge didn't pull the trigger.

Which pieces?  I am pretty sure that Houston prefers Courtney Lee to the likely late first-round pick that the Celtics will have next season.

I love it. A player we supposedly want we don't get, and it means Danny's sleeping on the job, all under the assumption that all it'd take to get Ariza is Sheed + a 1st (a probably late 1st at that).

Really, guys?
