Is he actually going to file retirement papers, or are the C's going to be on the hook for his salary next year?  "Waiving" isn't the same as "retirement" I don't think...  Let's wait for the rest of the story, if there is one...

Huge dissapointment. The C's need more at the wing to be true contenders. I love these guys. They are as gutsy as it gets. I'm more proud of last years team than any previous C's team. But they need more. Anybody have any trade ideas? Bobby Simmons and Hayes are decent i guess but they're kinda just the best of what's left, right? I know some like Rudy Fernandez(not me).

Big Baby plays best when he has someone to impress.  Garnet pushed his buttons until he balled (double ontandra intended).  So with Shaq here there's no telling how hard baby is going to play.

Our front court needs to beat Miami's front court cause we're not beating their back court.

And somewhere, David Stern looks around a darkened building, locks his office door, and quietly opens a bottle of champagne he's been saving for a long, LONG time.

It's definitely a disappointment, but oh well.  The only question I have is, why do this now, rather than wait until closer to the start of the season?

ugh..looks like daniels is the primary back up to pierce. god help us....hope he can play 70 games

I'm not banking on Daniels making it through the season. I think the guy may be fragile. C's need another wing, this news definitely sucks.

If the alternatives were this and trading for some albatross just to do "something" then I'm all for it. Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don't make, right?!

Depends on what you mean by an albatross contract.  As long as it was two years or less, I would've done it.

And this is why I would've liked to see Posey back in green.  He's not worth 6 million dollars, but as I've been saying all week, he's better than nothing, which is what we have now.

I would imagine the Hornets would beg to differ. I was 100% in favor of trading for Prince because he could help this team, cost us less than paying Sheed, and at the end of the year we could cut ties if it didn't work out. Posey of 08 is not Posey of today and he will likely continue to slide. Being in my late 30's I can promise you that each year his lateral quickness is making huge declines which means his defensive prowess is going to do the same. I was a big fan of James while here and wanted to resign him at reasonable numbers, however that is an example of a contract that I don't want. He can't CLEARLY make us a better team. If DA thought so and he was available then he would have done it. The biggest clear thing we know is no one of value was available at a reasonable deal or else he would have pulled the trigger.

THis seems highly unlikely that this is official. It would be incredibly stupid to waive a guy that says he is going to retire. You let them retire. If you waive him, what if he doesn't file retirement? they'd owe him 13 million over the next 2 years and be powerless to stop it.

Edit: Nevermind. This exact issue is addressed in the ESPN writeup:

Quote
The Boston Celtics announced Tuesday that they have waived Wallace after coming to a mutual agreement under which Wallace plans to retire.

Disappointing but unsurprising. I wrote this on July 16th:

...but it's looking more and more like they'll go the cheap route and let sheed retire and just take the savings as free agency passes them by. with all the deals going on it seems like they could have gotten SOMETHING done to get a real wing backup. I'll keep my fingers crossed that there's a josh howard deal in the works (he'd be a great 3rd wing for us) but until proven otherwise, i'll due to the lack of movement and lack of rumors, i'll assume they're taking the savings.

too bad.

I do not believe for a moment that we agree to pay him the remainder without him playing for us. Does is seem reasonably possible to anyone that we agreed to just pay him to sit at home for 2 years with us getting nothing? I'm guess the answer is 'no'.

I imaging the details will come out soon.

Is it possible within the rules of the CBA for the team to negotiate a buyout with 'Sheed that pays him a portion but not all of the salary left on his contract?

My understanding is that this is how it will go down.  It ain't my money, and for me it's highly worth it to do this just to get this darned issue settled, so we can move on.

He's been officially waived; the Celtics issued a press release.

However, waiver is a prerequisite to a buyout, so we still have no idea how much -- if any -- of Sheed's salary we'll be on the hook for.

I was in favor of Prince too, and would've preferred him over Posey too.

However, he only has 1 year left on his deal (which actually makes him valuable in a trade too) and clearly has more game left than Posey.

However, a) a straight up trade wouldn't have worked and b) the Pistons probably wanted Baby if not more.

I have no delusions about Posey being '08 Posey.  Unlike '08, though, we don't need him to play the 2, 3, and some 4.  All we'd need him to do is play 10-15 mpg backing up PP.  And I think there would've been a pretty good shot he could've done that.

And it wouldn't have hurt us either.  Now we have nothing.  Posey couldn't have made it worse than that.  He only has two years left on his deal, and wouldn't interfere with anything else we're doing.

Oh well...
