I've had a couple of rules to live by for a while now...."don't play freeze tag on the highway", (im a stickler for rules), "don't date women who own sex and the city dvd's", "don't play cards with a man named after a city", and "don't under and circumstances trade with roy hobbs"
Such words of wisdom from one so young.
Lawyers make a lot of money doing negotiations for a living people. It's why when a lawyer comes knocking at the door saying that he has a deal for you, you should be slamming that door in his face and running in the other direction as quickly as possible.

Believe it or not, nick, on 95% of these trades that come together, I don't have to do too much persuading. Instead, it's about trying to fill other teams' needs, and finding something that works for me, too. I just don't say "yes" until something makes sense for me, but I always try to keep the door open to keep working.
I know some GMs are good at talking others into doing deals. I've found that generally when I try to do that, people think I'm trying to sell them a bill of goods, and they back away from deals.
Ummm .....it was a joke Roy. But you bring up a good point of discussion. That is the best way to try to complete trades. I will admit, if you are coming to me, I am probably a tough person to close a deal with, so I tend to initiate most trades I complete if not all.
I make offers. Might make a couple comments or counters but, I'm generally the same way about how much actual selling of the I do. It's usually a quick yea or nay for me too. Most of my talking during trades comes when someone low balls me and then continues to come back looking for counters or comes back telling me something I just don't agree with. Then I go into full salesman and debate mode.
The guys I have had dealings with regularly over the last couple of drafts that I have a good relationship with, we will actually talk about why we are offering something, why it does or doesn't work for us and be real open. Those tend to be the most fair and most easy trades to do and to be honest, its a great way of helping to build your team and theirs. Networking with regular people is a great way of making trades that benefit both teams and facilitating getting players from third teams to your team through your regular networking pals.
