I agree with the poster who said getting Hughes would be like signing Mikki Moore.  I don't care how great Hughes' workouts have been.  He has been a noncontributer for years now, even on bad teams.
Diaw actually does seem like a great fit.  He has a super well rounded "fill in the blanks" type of game.  And we could always use an extra fat guy.

I can't see why anyone would do a sign and trade for Hughes unless Charlotte gave us a draft pick.

If you can get Shaq with the minimum you can get Larry Hughes with the minimum.  I agree with other posters, he doesn't make sense with Daniels and Wafer already at the wings.

I could live with Diaw as long as we didn't have to give up Baby.  But if he's our backup SF he makes our slow team even slower.

Steve Jackson hates losing.  If there is a team he could accept being a backup for I think it would be the C's.  And he would probably be a 30 minute a game backup anyway.  Daniels and Wafer wouldn't get any time but I think most of us could live with that.

Hat tip to Celtics Hub for this:

Quote
Marc Spears of Yahoo! just tweeted this:

Celtics still need swingman behind Pierce and Allen.Could it be Larry Hughes? Word is Cs and CHA interested. Hughes looking good in workouts.

The C’s and Bobcats are interested? Fire up your best sign-and-trade proposals, and keep in mind contracts signed as part of s-and-t deals must be a minimum of three years in length, though only the first must be fully guaranteed.

I think Celticshub jumped to the wrong conclusion here, probably misunderstanding what the tweet meant.  The C's and CHA are both interested in signing Hughes, not in working out a sign and trade for him.  This was reported days (or maybe even weeks) ago.

There is no chance the C's do a sign and trade for Hughes.  He is a vet minimum player, unless he resigns for slightly more with Charlotte.

The thing about SJax is that right now CHA has a reasonable chance of making the playoffs, but without him they really are not in the picture.

The problem for CHA is that they have a pretty hefty payroll, I believe. Trading SJax would certainly save them money, but they'd still have a pretty big payroll and also not be a playoff team.

So, my feeling is that if they are going to have a pretty big payroll either way, you probably should be one with at least a chance of making the playoffs.

CHA, however, could be one of those teams that mid-season starts looking to move players. I wonder how long we can keep Sheed as a trade chip.

I figured Jordan will try to cut Dampier and then re-sign him at a more reasonable level of contract, like say around $3-4 million per year. That would mean their starters would be Augustin, Jackson, Wallace, Thomas and Dampier.

Boris Diaw suddenly becomes a vastly overpaid bench player especially given the fact that Wallace and Jackson play just about every single minute of the small forward position on the team. If Charlotte was going to cut salary, Diaw, Diop, Carroll and Najera would be the guys they would want to unload. Problem is Carroll, Diop and Najera are just god-awful players and no one is going to waste a fat salary dumping contract or trade exception on those guys unless the Bobcats are willing to move next year's 1st rounder as well, which they won't.

So Diaw has to be the guy they move because he's the only one with any type of value. Diaw over the last 3 years has hit the three ball at a very nice 36.7% clip. He is a plus defender at the 3 and 4 spots. He is a an alright rebounder for his size and a decent free throw shooter. He would make a perfect glue guy, defensive stopper specialist at the SF position for this team's second unit. He could also be had by simply trading Wallace's retiring contract along with Gaffney and LaFayette's non-guaranteed contracts making it a $9 million savings for Charlotte.

I love this idea.

I absolutely agree, Charlotte won't trade SJax, it doesnt make sense for them, they just made playoffs for the first time in how many years? SJax made them better...

they would be dumb to trade him away...especially now with Miami and Orlando and Atlanta, count them dead last in the South East Division

Chris is right about Hughes being strictly a vet min guy.  Thanks for once again being the voice of sanity, Chris.  I wouldn't want Hughes even at the vet min, though: he stinks.  He is a headcase: h-e-a-d-c-a-s-e.  He signed a big deal with Wash, and immediately sucked, just like Skippy Blount.  I'd have to think hard to name 10 guys I would rather NOT have on the Cs.

Diaw would be a great pickup.  He's been under-used in Charlotte ever since Jax arrived.  But surely Diaw can command far more in a trade than what we can offer, so I think it's just a pipe dream.  I love Diaw, though.

How about Hughes and a large trade exception for Sheed, Gaffney and Lafayette
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Can't happen, they are over the cap.  A third team would need to be involved.

Defensive stopper at the 3? Really?

  • You know my methods, Watson.
I think this is all pure speculation and I don't believe anything will come of this.

Wouldn't surprise me if nothing came of 'Sheed's contract and he just ended up retiring when the dust settles.

I happen to think he would be a very good defensive SF. He's no Gerald Wallace but he is a good defensive player.
