If Ainge really landed Shaq for the vet min, I'm flabbergasted.  Shaq put up numbers last year that would get any other 7 footer at least the MLE and two years ago in Phoenix, he played 73 games, 30 minutes a game, scored 17.8 points and grabbed 8.4 boards.  I cannot believe that some 2nd tier contender like Atlanta or Denver was unwilling or unable to swing a deal to give Shaq more than the vet min.

I think Baby is staying put, for sure:

J. O'Neal / Shaquito / Erden
Kevin Garnett / Big Baby / Gody

Big Baby's role will be as big or bigger than ever. We need his youthful exuberance in that mix of bigs.

Erden is going to be told to go back and play in Europe.

This may not be not about money it might be about a team that can beat Kobe.

I just wonder if getting Shaq for the minimum might mean Sheed is thinking of returning especially if it's looking pretty bleak Perk might help at all next year.  5 bigs of JO, Shaq, Sheed, KG, Baby all keeping their minutes down and all keeping everyone fresh I would love.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
I think this is bad news for Baby. KG, JO, Perk, Shaq. 4 quality bigs KG and JO are PFs who can play center. Perk and Shaq are strictly centers. JO and Shaq didn't come to ride the pine, Perk will get his minutes when he's healthy, and KG isn't going anywhere. I think BBD just became a trade chip.

I respectfully disagree. I think it allows Perk to take as much time as needed for his recovery. Baby is a true PF and can extend the floor outside of the post. Baby also provides energy off the bench. For the regular season, Baby also rests the weary legs of KG, JO and Shaq.

Part of David Aldridge's article said the Celtics were not optimistic that Perk would be able to return this season. SO, for me, anything we get from Perk should be considered a bonus. Therefore, trading away BBD makes no sense whatsoever.

I didn't read the part about Celtics not being optimistic about Perk. I don't think that's bodes well for the play-offs, but it does for Baby. However, if Perk is expected to be back January like we've been hearing I think Baby is a goner. 5 rotation bigs isn't really necessary when we could use one to strengthen other areas of need.

Since Baby only makes 3 mil, he'd have to be packaged with someone else in order to bring back a big time wing to back up Ray and Pierce (this team's only area of need).  But even if you put Baby, Maquis and Wafer all together, that's less than 7 million dollars.  Who's that going to bring back in a trade?  Shawn Marion?

I think you mean 2012-2013, being that all the Big Three and JO are going to be under contract in 2011-2012, and Shaq might be too.

A couple quick thoughts:

1) If Shaq is going to come off the bench, this is fantastic.  While I've pushed the idea that I'd be OK with him starting, he's obviously a much better fit off the bench.  His post game should open up things for shooters like Nate and Wafer, and if things really go dry, he can just be the offense.

2) I know it's been said before, but can you imagine back to the draft lottery in 2007 if someone had told you, "don't worry about getting screwed in the lottery, Danny is going to parade in the likes of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Jermaine O'Neal, Shaquille O'Neal, Rasheed Wallace, Michael Finley, Stephon Marbury, and Sam Cassell to make you feel better?  Though a number of them are/were shadows of their former selves, just the fact that all became Celtics would've been unimaginable several years ago.

3) Also love this against Miami.  Yeah, the LA thing is cool too, but Bynum might (if healthy) do an OK job on.  Miami has no answer for him on their frontline, let alone their reserve.  He could really be a Miami killer.

4) Final thought: if Rasheed is not part of us getting Shaq, it's not only great, but begs some questions.  Will we still deal Rasheed AND will Danny be daring and try to package someone else with him (Perk?).  While I'd hate to see Danny package Perk, we now have 4 legit big man (albeit injury prone).  And if Danny doesn't see Perk recovering and/or doesn't plan on re-signing him, trading him might be OK.  He and Sheed together could net us a 10 million dollar player (like Tayshaun Prince).

  • You know my methods, Watson.
I expect to see the 2nd unit play a lot more this year...  The regular season is a dress rehearsal for better things to come, and I think it will take some time to see how all these pieces mesh together.

Something tells me Shaq in a Celtics jersey will re-energize the big fellow...  Count me in as on board with this (if it happens).

I hope he shows up close to in-shape.  I won't be fooled by that slimming all-black outfit he wore on Kimmel...

Did you see the Kimmel interview?  He looks to be in pretty good shape.  I believe he lost 20 lbs last year and was in good shape for Cleveland.

It certainly would have made me feel better.  That season was just about the worst.
Celtics fan for life.

Sorry if this has been explained ad nauseum elsewhere -- but, can someone explain to me how/if Sheed's contract (or Sheed, the player) can be preserved till the trade deadline.  Does it just mean that the C's pay him till then (does he need to be officially on the roster)?  Or does Sheed either have to officially retire or accept a buyout if he's not on the roster?

If Sheed can be preserved till the deadline, this seems to me to be the best of all worlds.  Allows the C's to address injuries if they occur, allows them to see if Perk is healing, allows the option of Sheed returning mid-year.   A healthy team mid-year allows them to use his contract to strengthen wherever needed.  Prior to this apparent Shaq signing, I was wanting Sheed's contract traded for a defensive 3 ASAP, but now I think it prudent to wait -- if that is a possibility. Someone help me understand the logistics around this please.
