Would you dismiss this so lightly if he had killed somebody? The fact that he didn't is luck, and should really have no bearing on the rightness/wrongness/irrelevance of his choice; his choice and actions were identical to every other risky driver who decides to drive that fast. He just didn't crash. It supports the illusion of his control of the situation. No one is in control at that speed in that environment; there are too many uncontrolled variables. If you go that fast you are in that moment deciding your speed of travel is more important than the lives of all other people on the road, because you are adopting the exponentially increased risk of a crash (due to circumstances beyond your control and within your control) as well as the exponentially increased severity of an accident due to the high speeds.

He made a mistake. This does not mean that he is a bad person. Nor does it mean he is not intelligent. But it does mean that he made the choice that his entertainment was worth more than knowing he was endangering lives. So it's not trivial either.

this discussion is getting pretty stale. two different schools of thought here.

you think he didn't kill anyone out of sheer luck. you appear to not be alone, which is fine.

i'm happy to admit that high speed driving is dangerous indeed, but i also have some clear video evidence than shows this guy never even came close to having a wreck, much less killing anyone.

this country is filled with people that just don't want other people to drive fast and try to prevent them from doing so. the point i've been making in this thread is i'd rather people actually learn how to drive their cars first, then worry about others. there's plenty of wreckless drving to go around, and i ain't talkin about a $100K sports car travelling down a large, wide open california freeway on a sunny dry day....

These are needless statistics that can easily be avoided by exercising common sense.  Something Mr. Evans clearly didn't consider before driving 130 mph.  To me that's plain stupidity in the common sense department.  I don't care if he's young or not.  

Who gives a darn what paid for the car?  That shouldn't have to do with his idiotic decision to drive the car at a reckless speed on a freeway.

Not sure if you've been directly or indirectly affected by a motor vehicle fatality due to something that could easily have been avoided but that might have you singing a different tune.

I did my stupid driving when I was in high school.  It was in a station wagon going to fast through a curvy hilly road. 



I would call myself an idiot at that point.  Yes, I knew the curves and the speed I could handle it.  Doesn't mean it was safe for me and anyone that might have been traveling the same direction or the opposite direction. 


I don't care how well it looked like he was in control.  Fatal accidents don't only happen to bad drivers, drunk drivers, tired drivers, cell phone or texting drivers or old drivers. 

It can happen to any driver.

Youth both is and isn't an excuse.

Youth is an explanation. Add to that his being a pro athlete and he probably feels immortal and is high on testosterone.

What he did is incredibly irresponsible and not something I would do, but I understand why someone like him would do that.

Rationality is not the correct term to use since anyone driving that speed is well aware that they are doing it to enjoy the thrill, not because it is the safest way to drive. If their goal is to maximize their enjoyment by appeasing their thrill seeking, then he made a rational choice.

Too bad he didn't crash. There would be far less disagreement and debate.

Look. I had no thoughts on this issue one way or another until this thread popped up. Then I started seeing people who were actually posting that driving 130 mph on a moderately busy freeway was an amusing, innocent, youthful indiscretion. But really, it's the same as standing on a sky scraper in a somewhat busy area of town and tossing a softball sized rock off of it. Or, better yet, it's like standing on the sky scraper and playing a game where the object is to hit the sidewalk and avoid a pedestrian. I mean, sure, you're not TRYING to hurt someone, in fact you're trying NOT to, and, if you succeed in avoiding to hurt someone, you can claim it's because you were skilled, but really it's incredibly dangerous and should absolutely have legal consequences, hopefully before someone inevitably gets hurt. Furthermore, whether or not you or I or anyone else succeeded or failed at playing that game has nothing to do with whether or not it was a life-threatening activity...hence the reason a discussion of our own poor choices has no bearing whatsoever on how dangerous such a choice is. It certainly should shape our understanding of such behavior and how to approach correcting it, but does not at all affect the danger of the activity.

I mean, smoking is ridiculously common...so I suppose it's not dangerous to smoke?

When going 130 MPH on a public highway, many horrifying and disastrous things can happen that are completely out of a driver's control.

There's nothing to gain by doing something like that. Young kids see things like that and think it's okay to ignore the law just because it's what rich, young, professional athletes do.

It's just not smart to do that. He's learned his lesson though. I hope.
