Yeah why were guns drawn? That makes no sense, thats reckless police work to me. And it took them that long to get a cop to his car? And he needed to pick him up in a parking lot not on the highway? Dude gets that far away I just let him go man.

Way to jeopardize other people's lives and a huge NBA contract, too. Get it right, Tyreke.

i understand he was driving recklessly but was the guns being drawn and handcuffs necessary? i thought this guy was just involved in a homicide for a second. i understand a ticket but they went a little overboard...
I don't see the problem with guns being drawn. Cops need to protect themselves and they have no idea why someone felt the need to drive that fast. How are they supposed to know there wasn't another crime preceding a getaway? Or is one car chasing down the other?

It is also beyond a speeding ticket at that speed. That's reckless endangerment. Drivers like that should be arrested.

What kind of budget do you want to allocate for the police? They only have so many available at any point in time.

It would be reckless to not draw weapons when someone drives like that for an extended period of time. You have no idea what they might have been fleeing. You protect yourself and figure out the situation. Being a cop should not involve suicide missions.

Getting him in the parking lot is also a lot better than pursuing him on the highway. We don't need to add speeding cops to the problem.

I really don't understand your expectations.

interesting watch!  i have ZERO problems with guns being drawn.  he put himself in that position by being an idiot and putting innocent lives at risk with his driving.

i was glad to see he complied when pulled over.

side question.....why did the passenger get arrested??

Completely agree ... if you're an officer and you've been chasing some idiot going 130, 9 times out of ten they're going that fast, (and don't want to get caught), for a reason ... really lucky nobody was killed with all that traffic.

If this guy had crashed and killed someone, I don't think we'd be getting all these "no big deal" comments. This guy was only the fourth player in history to average 20, 5 & 5 in his rookie season, (behind Oscar, Michael, and LeBron), and he's acting like this? It's a shame, man ... throw it all away for a joy-ride, fool.

The guy is an idiot.

And i know that site policy states that i shouldnt call others an idiot, but for those who have made light of the speeding, or those who have said the cops went too far are idiots themselves.

And whoever said that he didnt go out to endager peoples lives, you my friend are the biggest idiot.

And, last on my hitlist, Edgar. As a moderator i'd expect you to have a bit more sense about you.  You condone, or should i say "dont have a problem with speeding drivers", but not in heavy traffic????

Any dangerous speeding on any public road or highway endagers the life of motorists and possibly pedestrians.  Just because there is 10 or 1000 motorists on the road doesnt change the fact that accidents happen.

I honestly cannot believe what i've read in this topic.

**Please note, that i have sped before, so please dont think that i'm acting all high and mighty.  I realise that times i have sped (10 or so over) can still cause accidents. However, i dont think anyone should condone or justify speeding.**

I know I'll be judged for saying this, but I don't see the big deal at all.  He got guns drawn on him for speeding?  I don't get it.  This wasn't Delonte driving wasted, he was alert and driving fast.  Sometimes people seem too judgemental to me.  The guy got a speeding ticket.  Big deal.

I bet the ratio of speeders at 130 being bad dudes is pretty high.

I'd highly disagree.  How many high speed car chases are there with evading criminals, verse people just racing their cars at excessive speeds?

Expectations? My expectation of the police would be to stop the problem when they find it... Not wait almost 15 minutes, letting this guy do 130 on a highway with another car, You think that is safe? "Hey this guys doing a buck thirty, thats cool we'll just let him keep speeding for as long as he wants then catch him in a parking lot...Then you know what, we'll draw guns on him... Perfect!"

My expectations sir? Check yours.

Please explain how law enforcement catches up to someone doing 130 or confronting them on the highway in a way where they would not also be endangering other motorists?

What?!  Do you honestly think that the police just let him keep going b/c they didn't feel like responding, or they didn't take it seriously?  Let's say the closest available police officer was 5 miles away, he would then have to anticipate where on the highway he'd have to hop on to catch up.  And let's not even do the math of how fast he'd have to go to catch up.  I could fully see this taking 10 to 15 minutes to fully handle.  I also agree that taking care of it in a parking lot was better than a high speed chase on the highway.

As far as using a gun, I am in full support.  I live in Tampa, and after the fatal shooting of the two officers here the other week, it reminded me of the crazy people that cops deal with on a regular basis.  And that was on a routine stop.  To deal with someone who was going 130mph on a busy highway I think it's safe to say that the driver is a risky person to deal with.  The guns weren't discharged, stun guns weren't used, and no-one got hurt.  The police have a right to protect themselves, especially when dealing with a person behaving high risk behavior.

The cops went too far.

Firstly, it was absolutely stupid and reckless for Evans to be racing down the highway at speeds of well over a hundred miles per hour.  However, there were no signs that he ever eluded any officers, or resisted the police in any way.  By the time he got pulled over, it appeared that he was driving at a normal speed and pulling in to a parking lot.

I know I'll probably get in trouble for mentioning this, but if it had been a middle aged white man inside that Mercedes, I doubt very seriously that guns get drawn.

It's a crying shame the way young black men are treated by law enforcement in this country.

How dumb can Evans be?  You have money.  Go pay to race somewhere that will not put others in danger.  To often, this can happen

As for the police and guns, pull them.  They were dealing with two guys that clearly showed no care about human life.  For the police, who knows what else these guys might do.

Don't want to deal with that, don't race on the highway at 130 MPH.

reactions are too far one way or the other...

fact: i believe over 90 is reckless driving in most states, so when you drive 130 in a tinted out Benz, you're going to have a gun drawn on you.

fact: if this is the dumbest thing Evans does, he's going to be a very good player for years to come. in a seperate thread today we're talking about a guy who just won an NBA championship after years of playing drunk and punching out fans in the stands of Detroit.

seriously who cares? when Delonte was pulled over mariachi-style, we all thought it was "sad" because he's got BPD and he's a former Celtic who we like. but which was dumber? Mr. West, clearly....

I'm sorry but this just doesn't rank that high on the dumb list....
