Well, turning Sheed into Josh Howard would improve our roster dramatically, though beginning to question just how possible that is. But even if we were to land Shaq with Sheed's deal, and nothing else, we'd still be a better team now than with a minimum guy filling in that spot. So in that regard, I think we can improve the team.A side note: I was pushing the idea of waiting until the deadline to get someone; however, how long can Sheed stay in limbo for? Will the NBA let us keep him "active" at home, then trade him, then have him retire? Will Wyc balk at paying Sheed 3-4 million dollars of his deal to sit at home until the deadline?
Even with Sheeds contract, unless we get Josh Howard or someone but I don't if that is going to happen. I don't know if the Celtics can do much to improve their roster until the trade deadline. We're really just going to have to improve internally and go along until the trading deadline IMO.

Yeah I would suspect that he can't be in 'might retire' mode until the trade deadline and then all of sudden retire after being traded. That's a bit too obvious for Stern no too have a problem with.

Also could we get something better at the trading deadline? Getting Shaq would likely make Perkins or O'Neal tradeable at the deadline.

That's a bit too obvious for Stern no too have a problem with.I don't think "obvious" matters. There are players who have been "resigned" to be traded at midseason. Teams are constantly working out sign and trades, purely to get trade exceptions. These are all well-established and accepted ways of manipulating the CBA. It helps contenders get better, and teams hurting for money save money. Stern wouldn't step in on this, unless he wanted to anger owners.

It'd be one thing if he reported, but I think if Rasheed reports, he's playing the entire season.

Well, I think they can fill out the roster with some NBA quality depth, but other than that, I generally agree that at this point, they are looking at the trade deadline to bring in real reinforcements. And I am just fine with that. Bring in a vet minimum wing and big who can eat some minutes, and then re-evaluate in January when teams start selling guys off to save cash.

As for players being traded and retiring immediately, we saw it happen with the C's a couple times with Chris Mills, and with Rick Fox.

Trade BBD, Lafayette, Gaffney,& Sheed's contract to Indiana for Troy Murphy. Indiana is 10 million over the cap & needs cap relief. Murphy averaged 15 points & 10 rebounds last year. Then sign a backup wing player for the vet minimum.
