The difference between Rondo and Paul isn't solely related to numbers.  Paul's shooting ability would simply make our offense significantly more well-rounded.  CP3 isn't a liability at anything, and unfortunately, Rondo is.

There are plenty of point guards that don't have as noticeable a flaw as Rondo's shooting that are significantly worse players than him.

And if you sub Paul's numbers from last year for Rondo's, we go from 20th in shots near the rim (according to hoopdata) to 29th. And that's ignoring the Perk/JO switch, or Tony Allen leaving. We'd likely finish well last in the league in shots from the inside, which I wouldn't call significantly more well rounded.

I don't think substituting those numbers gives you any sort of an accurate number.  They are completely different teams.  Paul would help us in the paint because he would prevent the sag off defense that clogs the lane with Rondo.

Help who in the paint? KG? Ray? JO? Baby? PP? Davis is the only person in that group that takes more than 1/3 of his shots from the inside and he gets them blocked at an alarming rate. Rondo, Perk and Tony (who all take more than half their shots from the inside) combined to take almost half of our inside shots last year. Swapping them for JO and CP (who shoots about 20% of his shots from the inside) isn't going to push that stat in the right direction. Opposing teams won't need to clog the lane because it will be much easier to defend.

Chris Paul can score better. Rondo can do EVERYTHING ELSE better.

BTW this team has been carried by Rajon’s scoring at times.

AND the talent-to-salary ratio might be one of the best bargains in the league.  We have one of the best PGs in the league, who is one of the best game changers for well under max salary.

Nobody worried about health issues of CP3?

I gotta kinda agree with this as well. I'm a big CP3 fan but injuries tend to cut most players careers short. I can think of a dozen off the top of my head that never came back the same, (Webber,Brand,Garnett,T Hardway.....

We've won with Rondo and can win again. Ray hits a couple of shots in game seven and we'd be thinking about banner 19 now.

Chris Paul had a torn meniscus injury last season + a sprained ankle early in the year. That is not worrying, he should recover fully from that.

In three of his previous four seasons he played 78-80 games.

The one other season, his second year, he played 64 games ... and recovered fully to post back to back 20-10 seasons.

I don't see the injuries as a big concern.

The problem trading for Paul? In a few years we too will be rebuilding and he will be complaining again.

Chris Paul would be one of the most attractive players in the league to prospective free agents. Possibly the second most attractive player after LeBron James.

A massive reputation. Best point guard in the league. Pass first point guard. A guy who'll create easy shots for you.

Rebuilding around a player of his specific talent + overall talent level + reputation ... it makes a lot of things easier.

So can LJ bring in talent or did Cleveland have no talent?  I'm getting confused.

Paul is a better scorer, a better overall shooter, a better free throw shooter, a better three point shooter, a better rebounder (believe it or not) and a better passer.  He scores more points, gets more rebounds, gets more assists, has fewer turnovers, gets more steals, and gets to the line more often.  Their defense is probably roughly equal, although I don't blame people who pick Rondo.

Take a look, comparing Rondo vs. Paul's '09 and '10 seasons:

To attract big free agents, money will always be the most important factor.  Having elite teammates that are already on the team, however, is a pretty big secondary draw.

I have a lot of loyalty to Rondo, he wants to be here and let's face it - he took a discount to stay here.

No one denies Paul is a great player, but on the list of teams he's supposedly handed to NO as possible trade partners - NY Knicks, Orlando, Dallas and Portland - Boston is absent. He seems to have no interest in coming here.

Rondo's been in the league 4 years and he's had a higher rebounding rate than Paul all 4 years. He also (obviously) rebounds better than Paul does in the playoffs. Paul gets more assists but I think that's related to the fact that Boston tends to make the extra pass a lot more than NO does.

No, he avoided the risk that he would get injured and not get a contract at all.  That's not taking a discount, that's being smart.  How much would he make if he couldn't play basketball?

It is a fallacy to say he took a discount to stay in Boston when he didn't have an option (at the time of the deal) to go anywhere else.

Cleveland haven't been in a position to attract a major free agent since LeBron James became an MVP caliber talent.

If they had of been in a position to sign a major free agent this past summer ... I think they convince someone to join, likely Amare Stoudemire, and LeBron never leaves.
