He is not even in the top 15 free agents.
I am going to dispute this. I don't think you can name 15 free agents better than Ray Allen. He's probably the best perimeter shooter available. Among shooting guards, he's behind Dwayne Wade (if he opts out) and Joe Johnson, but ahead of players like John Salmons, JJ Redick, and Ronnie Brewer.
Well, I didn't plan on only classifying shooting guards. If you take all the free agents this year, including every position, I think one can make the argument that Ray Allen is bubbling on the 15th best ranked player.
I look at it this way:
Top tier free agents: LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh.
Second tier free agents: Dirk Nowitzki, Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, Carlos Boozer, Rudy Gay, Paul Pierce, and David Lee.
Third tier free agents: Ray Allen, John Salmons, Luis Scola, Yao Ming (because of his injury, otherwise he's probably be a second tier guy), Josh Childress, Tyrus Thomas, Al Harrington, and Raymond Felton.
Clearly, Ray Allen is not close to being as good as top or second tier free agent. He's definitely a third tier guy, and his free agency value will largely depend on how much guys like John Salmons, Josh Childress, and Raymond Felton get. One could argue that Salmons and Childress are better players than Ray Allen right now.
