Time has proven - quite clearly - that the main thing of value we gave up in the Garnett and Allen deals was Jeff Green. And let's face it: Danny was all set to waste that pick on Why.
Jefferson is an injury- and substance-plagued disappointment. West has major issues. The rest are either role players or deservedly out of the league.
The trades were HUGE steals for the Celtics.
As I think about it, we traded three lottery picks to make those deals happen: The picks that became Brandon Roy (#7) to clear up salary (Ratliff's matching salary), Jeff Green (#5), and Johnny Flynn (#7). We also gave up #28 last year, used by Minny on Ellington, which forced us to use a first round pick this year (teams must have a 1st round pick every other year), which may not be worth that much, but there turned out (in retrospect) to be about 5 pretty good players yet to be drafted after that by my quick count.
Of course, those picks could've been used on different players...whatever...they were pretty solid assets to have, and trading away those 3 lottery picks is part of the reason for the predicament the team is in now, looking rather aged and having our so-called stars barely able to sustain 30 minutes/game, struggling against quicker (younger) teams, etc.
Throw in Al Jefferson and solid role players with decent contracts (at the time) in West and Gomes, and we did give up quite a bit of long-term value for a chance, just a chance, at a fairly short window of title-level play.
I think it's too early to judge (after one year) how much value was given with Flynn, too, but it seems like he'll be around for quite a while.
Was it worth it for 2 years of top level ball, 1 title, and this year's playoff run? Sure, but we might not be so sure if we're back where we started in a year or two (30-40 wins).
