The last three years have been more than sweet for me - but even better for my oldest son, because not only has he switched teams and favorite players from Kobe and LA to Paul Pierce and Boston, but by watching The Boston Celtics over the last few years, he has began to learn the most important thing to me:

The Value of TEAM. He has began to see the difference in style of play between both LA and Boston, and has admired how hard The Celtics have fought over the last 3 years.

That, to me - is priceless. And I don't believe we are done. This Team has one more fight left in them, I think.

rondo IMO is as good as guys around him. yea a guy will have a game now and then where it seems he carries a team, but im talkin bout consistency. chris paul will give us that all around game night in and night out. we have him, we win seris in 5 vs lakers. now rondo is great defense and rebounder. but we need to get value while we can. to win now!

Rondo carried the team over Cleveland. When's Chris Paul ever carried his team over as good an opponent in the playoffs?

Time has proven - quite clearly - that the main thing of value we gave up in the Garnett and Allen deals was Jeff Green. And let's face it: Danny was all set to waste that pick on Why.

Jefferson is an injury- and substance-plagued disappointment. West has major issues. The rest are either role players or deservedly out of the league.

The trades were HUGE steals for the Celtics.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

Yeah, I like Jeff Green quite a bit these days.

I just thought of all the picks and corresponding players we traded away in the DA era.  A bit of a reminder how much luck is involved in building a winner out of the draft.

The "price we paid" is looking to be less and less.  The assets that we gave up  have all depreciated substantially since the trades.  We gave up the half-crippled Big Al, who I still think can be a franchise cornerstone, but whose value is essentially nil today.  We gave up Delonte West, whose own issues are deep and well-documented.  We gave up the rights to Jeff Green (which likely would have been the rights to Yi...  ugh).  We gave up on Gerald Green, who's out of the league, and Ryan Gomes, who's been rumored to be a buyout candidate.

In retrospect...  really wasn't all that much to give up for a helluva three-year run (hopefully four).

As to not having any cap flexibility now...  well, if we've got to suffer through two years of decline, I can live with that.  Best-case, we'd only be a fringe playoff squad had we not made the trades.
Well, I think we would've been a 5/6 seed maybe winning a playoff round. IF there was no such thing as the lottery and we had gotten Kevin Durant instead of Yi....

Lets not get too carried away here. I agree that the trade favored the Celtics for sure but if Big Al is an injury disappointment, then so too is Garnett. And when I think substance plagued, I think Shawn Kemp and Lawrence Taylor, not Big Al. The guy made a mistake.

As I think about it, we traded three lottery picks to make those deals happen:  The picks that became Brandon Roy (#7) to clear up salary (Ratliff's matching salary), Jeff Green (#5), and Johnny Flynn (#7).  We also gave up #28 last year, used by Minny on Ellington, which forced us to use a first round pick this year (teams must have a 1st round pick every other year), which may not be worth that much, but there turned out (in retrospect) to be about 5 pretty good players yet to be drafted after that by my quick count.

Of course, those picks could've been used on different players...whatever...they were pretty solid assets to have, and trading away those 3 lottery picks is part of the reason for the predicament the team is in now, looking rather aged and having our so-called stars barely able to sustain 30 minutes/game, struggling against quicker (younger) teams, etc.

Throw in Al Jefferson and solid role players with decent contracts (at the time) in West and Gomes, and we did give up quite a bit of long-term value for a chance, just a chance, at a fairly short window of title-level play.

I think it's too early to judge (after one year) how much value was given with Flynn, too, but it seems like he'll be around for quite a while.

Was it worth it for 2 years of top level ball, 1 title, and this year's playoff run?  Sure, but we might not be so sure if we're back where we started in a year or two (30-40 wins).
