Drafting Avery Bradley is a signal that Ainge plans on using the MLE to sign a big man rather than a wing and that he has deep concern that someone will overpay to sign Tony Allen and/or Ray Allen.

It makes sense.  Since the Celtics need big man help now, they are better off getting a free agent who is ready to play than drafting a project big.

I'm just confused why Tony Allen, at 6-4, is plenty tall enough to be a shooting guard and, at times, even a small forward.  However, the 6-3 Bradley, with a large wingspan, is apparently way too small to play the 2-spot, even for 10 mpg.

Tony Allen is a legitimate 6-4. Bradley is really only 6-2. He's only 6-3 "in shoes." TA is a lot stronger. When you're going up against Joe Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Tyreke Evans, etc, those two inches and 15lbs of muscle make a huge difference.

Uh, TA is only 6'4" in shoes. This supposed 2 inches you speak of is really only 1 inch.

Horrible pick in my opinion. Hope he was drafted for trade reasons at some point. Too small to guard most two guards in the league reagrdless of how everyone is going on about his defensive game. Cannot get to the rim and get himself to the line and when he does he is a horrible free throw shooter. The Celtics needed a very good perimeter shooter or a big man and the best perimeter shooter available was James Anderson who also could take it to the rack. He was the best player in what most people thought was the best conference in the country and the
same one Bradley played in. No comparison in their offensive games. For you people complaining Anderson played no defense that's what we have Tony Allen for at that spot and his defense was not nearly as bad as you so called experts are making it out to be. The Spurs will be laughibg along time over this one!! Horrible Pick!!

Is it impossible for two players in one draft to become good?

I thought it was a bad pick, too... At first. He's a good, young player and it looks like you haven't done your research.

My research comes from seeing all these Big 12 players live and following that league closely . I live in that area. The Celtics needed a scoring wingman and a good frontcourt presence and they got neither in this draft. Anderson was still available and a prolific scorer. No comparison in their offensive games. Made sense to me. By the way Anderson, while not the defensive player Bradley is, is better than he gets credit for on this board. Everyone seems to put a lot of faith in this board on NBADraft.net and Anderson got a 9 out of 10 on defense. Just saying.  The beauty of this is we will get to see this play out and I think San Antonio will be the ones laughing this time next year in my opinion. Anderson could end up starting for them before year's end and was a 20 pick. Some quote, unquote Draft experts have said the same thing in evaluating this draft.

I watched a fair amount of Texas games this year, mainly to scout Damion James, so I saw quite a bit of Bradley.

He was interesting to watch in that he had two very polished assets, his defense and pull-up J, and the rest of his game was completely blank.  He had a solid handle but he didn't know what to do with it, he had no drive and dish game, he had no idea what to do when he got to the rim and he often just stood around without the ball.

In Boston, he'll be able to concentrate on what he already does well initially and hopefully be able to add additional skills slowly.

He's not all that unlike Russell Westbrook. Possessing virtually identical physical tools, their games aren't that much different either (though Bradley's more of a shooter and Westbrook's more of a scrapper).  Not sure if Bradley can match Westbrook's ability to dramatically improve his game every year, but the raw materials are there.

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson

It all comes down to whether or not Bradley can defend starting NBA shooting guards. If he can, then Danny just created one of the most dynamic backcourts of the future. If he can't then Danny just selected at nice trade asset, assuming Bradley isn't a bust. Either way, I like the pick.

I have no regrets about passing on Anderson.  He's a volume scorer whose efficiency is likely to take a hit in the NBA and he isn't really good at anything but scoring.

Only guy I wish we would have taken instead was Damion James.  I think James would have been a fantastic guy to pair with Rondo and help inject speed/rebounding to our veteran squad.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
My fear about Bradley is this:

- I believe he's too small to be a 2 guard.

- You either have court smarts or you don't.  I don't think this kid is smart enough to learn the nuances of playing PG.  As noted above, he can play defense and has a pull-up jumper - little else.  He'll have to develop and that takes a LOT of time.

So anyone who thinks drafting this kid makes Nate Robinson expendable is crazy.  This kid will hardly sniff the court next season.  He should get stashed away in reserve...  Drafting him means NOTHING towards Danny's plans next season...

I do agree with you about Damion James. Always loved his game at Texas and would have been a good fit in Boston. Was shocked he went so low. Seems the NBA punishes Seniors which makes no sense to me. As far as the Bradley/ Anderson debate goes we will just have to agree to disagree. Since you're a scout I know you have more knowledge than me but you probably know alot about the Big 12 which most people agree was one of the two best leagues in the country last year and what Anderson did with little help against some of the better teams in the league, i.e. Kansas, K State, Baylor, Texas was to me far more impressive than Bradley's game.I know that always does not translate to the NBA but these are not slouch defensive teams he put great numbers up against.  But like I said the beauty of this is we will see in the next two years or so if I am right or a complete idiot.

While I haven't seen much of either player, you also have to take into account the fact that one of the players is a freshman and the other a junior. Anderson's 22 points a game is a lot better than the 12 a game from Bradley, but the 13 a game that Anderson put up as a freshman seems fairly comparable. I'd be less worried about San Antonio laughing next year if we end up laughing in the future.

Obviously, I liked James, too. Totally agree with you about Anderson - he adds nothing to our club save shooting efficiency that won't hold up in short minutes anyway. No regrets whatsoever about passing on anyone from a Travis Ford system.
