The Chicago Bulls have a deal in place that would move Kirk Hinrich and the 17th pick to the Washington Wizards, freeing up enough cap space to pursue two maximum-salary players on this summer's free-agent market, sources with knowledge of the Bulls' plans said Thursday.

It wasn't immediately clear what Washington would send to Chicago in the trade.

The deal can't be officially consummated until July 8, when the Wizards will have room under the salary cap to absorb Hinrich's $9 million contract without having to send back anything of similar value.

Since it's a good-faith deal for the time being, there remains a chance it could fall apart. But according to one source, the Sacramento Kings are prepared to make a similar deal with the Bulls in the Wizards' stead if that were to happen.

Either way, moving Hinrich and the pick would push Chicago's space under the cap from $20 million to more than $30 million. That puts the Bulls on equal footing with the Miami Heat in pursuing not just one but two members of a free-agent class that is expected to include LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer, Amare Stoudemire and Joe Johnson.

if this works out, this is a heck of a deal for Chicago. They can go get LBJ and Bosh now without sign and trades

Gonna be exciting watching Rose, LeBron, Bosh, and Noah battle Wade, Johnson, and Amare in the Eastern Conference Finals next year.

Maybe the Celtics will take the Bucks to 7 games.

So, this offers an interesting question.  If they make this trade of essentially Hinrich for nothing, does that create a $9 million trade exception for the Bulls, even though they are under the cap?  So, could they in theory sign 2 max (or near max) guys, and then still use the trade exception to fill extra holes?

I just wrote this in another thread, but if they get Lebron and one of the big men, I have a feeling they will come knocking on Danny's door to talk sign and trade of Ray for Deng.  And I don't know who would say no in that situation.  Deng might be the better player, but Ray is the better fit on that team.

I absolutely love this deal for Chicago.

They're finally doing the right things in that front office after a decade of misfires.  Setting themselves up very nicely.

Great.  Danny missed out on buying Miami's pick at 18 - strike one.  Then he missed out on buying Chicago's pick at 17 - strike two.

Good deal for Washington too, adding Hinrich and another trading chip to a team contemplating Arenas.

Is Washington running a charity service?

Doesn't this essentially mean that they swapped Caron Butler for Kirk Hinrich?

Great.  Danny missed out on buying Miami's pick at 18 - strike one.  Then he missed out on buying Chicago's pick at 17 - strike two.

How could he have been in the talks for those?  Unless Sheed is definitely retiring, with all of his money coming off the books, he couldn't compete.  Those teams were looking for cap space, and until it is sure Sheed is retiring (and a deal is worked out), the C's don't have that ability.

By the way, I hate the term "selling" picks in these circumstances.  They are using picks to unload contracts for cap space.  There is a big difference.

Potential contending teams giving away gifts are going to look other places before look at us. We are also over the cap so we have to give back equivalent salary for Hinrich.

Not sure how these things are strikes.

Yeah, the Celtics really don't have the ability to do much of anything today.  Hoping for anything more than a minor trade involving the #19 for a future pick or multiple picks later in this draft is silly.

Nothing particularly exciting is going to happen for the Celtics for quite some time guys.  You just have to enjoy what's happening for other teams right now.  Imagine the possibilities of the next super dominant team in the NBA....

Seeing exciting things happening for anybody but the Lakers is enjoyable right now.

Well, there's not much to hope / dream for as far as the Celtics are concerned, so I'm enjoying the prospects for other teams today.  In a year or two when the Celtics are in the midst of rebuilding and they are players in trades or making a high pick or two, then I'll do the same with scenarios involving the C's.

The fact is, it looks like at least one team will come out of this summer looking pretty [dang] impressive and that's exciting.  Much more exciting than anything that's going to happen in Boston this summer.

Me either...And in all honesty... Why the heck would we want the 17th or 18th pick in this draft anyway? Danny is trying to trade out, why spend money we dont have on a draft pick that wont help us at all? We should be selling our pick to try and get a few extra dollars because we are certainly going to need it.
