So do we have the ability to take advantage of any of these cap related deals?

Not really, because we're not under the cap.  These teams that want cap space don't want to have to take players with actual salary back.  Hence, they have to trade with teams that are under the cap that only have to trade second round picks in return for players with significant salary.

If Rasheed were officially retired, then maybe the C's could pull off a trade for a player of some significance by tonight, but as that isn't the case, I don't see how that could happen.

I'll be pretty mad if Danny trades the 19 for a future draft pick.

The draft makes some gm's turn a little batty. If Danny and co. can swindle some team that thinks it is better than it is and gets a lottery pick or equal pick next year in a better draft, then more power to them. I trust their player evaluation and if they aren't enamored with anyone on the board at 19: go for it. Sucks for the fans, but you can't make business decisions with the fans' immediate reaction in mind.

Sheed retiring should give us the ability to.

I tend to agree with PosImpos. Also, I have been combing the headlines and have not found Wallace's name mentioned once.

Although I do remember Ainge insisting, in the days leading up to the 2009 draft, that Giddens and Walker were better prospects than any player available at the end of the 1st round or beginning of the 2nd.

Depends on the situation. If a team is looking to escape the 1st round pick cap hold, then Wyc can open up his pockets and purchase a pick. Or we might see more weird trades like the Heat giving up a player and lower pick for a higher pick and a few mil won't even be needed. Gonna be interesting to watch.

We also might be able to get a higher pick (like NOH's 11th) by taking on a long contract that a team wants to get out under from. Sheed is the most likely bait there.

this would have been a solid argument 10 years ago but there isn't a GM out there not smart enough to put some protection on the pick for at least several years to guard against coughing up a lottery pick.

For Danny to have so many slots to fill and only having the MLE and vet min available, he needs to utilize that draft pick this year (or use it to get multiple picks).  This team needs something added to it besides resigning it own FA's and an MLE.

If he's definitely retiring and we don't use his contract in another deal I'd go with trading him for Beasley.

So would I, but I struggle to find any indication Ainge has any interest in Beasley.

Has he ever said word one about him?

The problem is, if they are trying to get space for two max players, this doesn't help.  They want cap room, not role players.

Exactly. Although if Toronto is in fact willing to work out a sign and trade for Bosh, as has been rumored, then the Bulls would still have the cap space to sign James or Wade outright. Gortat and Pietrus could be moving parts with more modest contracts than Deng.

Yes -- Deng becomes useless to them if LeBron signs. Gortat would be a great addition.

Could be that NOH would give up the 11th pick if the Cs would take Julian Wright in exchange for the 19th pick. Would save the Hornets about 3mil next year which they desparately need.

No, but the whole Ray Allen thing was pretty quiet until a few hours before the draft. I'm not saying it will happen, though, just that I'd look into it. I think that if the plan is to reload on the fly that you need to take a chance like that.

From Chad Ford's chat today:

Quote
Chris (Boston,MA)

Chad are the Celtics still shopping their pick? What about the rumors about them shopping Kendrick Perkins with the pick? What gives??
Chad Ford  (12:59 PM)

Danny is always aggressive and I think he knows he needs to either supplement his team or tear it down. If someone will take Perkins and his knee problems, he'd do it. I think Danny would trade anyone on their roster, including KG or Rondo, for the right deal. And with Paul Pierce contemplating opting out of his deal and Sheed on the verge or retirement, there are scenarios where Boston is sitting at 20 million in cap room this summer.

EDIT - Anyone think there's a chance that Danny has told Pierce he's gonna rebuild and therefore expects Pierce to leave?

The C's don't have cap space or a trade exception big enough to do this deal with. With both teams over the cap the salaries have to kind of even out. Now Sheed(retires) for Darius Songalia, Julian Wright and the 11th makes more sense. The C's take on salary and are paid for it by taking the 11th pick ala tha Heat/Thunder trade. That way the C's get Wright, Songalia and the 11th and 19th picks.

Don't know about that Chad. I think even the most optimistic scenario puts us at about 16-17 mil in cap space.

That'd be great for Chicago.  Getting rid of Hinrich's contract and moving in the top 10.

Is Hayward really gonna fall to #17, though?
