I know Perk throws his hip out a little bit sometimes but did you see Gortat...it looked like he was skipping rope the way he was hopping back and forth...I think a lot of Perk's moving pick calls are because of reputation not substance...I think JVG also pointed this out...

btw...i like gortat's game...i think he brings the intangibles like varejo without the whining, crybaby act...svg needs to do something to shake them up...i wouldn't be surprised to see the magic play more superman and gortat together...with even lewis as the small forward...the magic aren't going to beat us with their 3 point shooting...they might as well try to match up with us...

Yeah, his 6th foul was kind of a joke.

Unfortunately, moving picks are simply called very inconsistently in the NBA.  Some players can get away with it - Perk can't.

I'm glad that our bigs are happy to use all of their fouls, though.  It's clearly worked well so far.

Oh, it's largely reputation calls with Perk, as they're just waiting for him to make a wrong move, (same with Sheed) ... but as Pos said, moving picks are a temperamental thing, and never called consistently one way or the other.

TP.

Howard sets about 20 picks a game that are at least as "moving" as Perk's. Just very frustrating to watch Perk get whistled for it when other players can do the exact same thing and get away with it- and it's not like it's that hard of a call to make. If the guy is moving or sticks out his hip, it's a foul.
But I'm not complaining about the C's overall treatment by the refs in this(or the Cleveland) series. Even Tommy says we're getting some calls!

I think it's mass effect. Everyone sets illegal picks. But the C's run their offense with Perk setting one on basically every possession. If you set that many picks, they have to call illegal screens once in a while, and more screens you set (and Perk sets a LOT), more they'll have to call.

Kind of like holding in the NFL. Happens every play, so they only call it once every 15 plays or so, unless it's very egregious. So if you hold on every play, they'll target you more frequently...not every time you hold, but more often than people who only hold on every other play.

Is it just me or are they calling this about 100 times more than they did 10-15 years ago? And I'm not sure why. Is it really that much of an issue that David Stern has to tell his officials "we need to clean this up!". All it does is put some of the best players in foul trouble and out of the game. How does that help the league?

Perk doesn't get any love from the Refs.  I don't think I have ever seen a 6th foul call on a screen, especially in the playoffs.  In the playoffs NBA refs typically give a player more margin of error for their last foul, but Perk doesn't get the same treatment that other players get.  It seems like that Perk gets no slack, the Refs are quick with the whistle.

Perk is just dumb setting up screens.

Thankfully, the Celtics players don't let this get to them.  If the refs call the game differently for the Celtics than other teams, the Celtics need to respond by playing differently or upping their game.

As our Cavs friend MMacOH wrote on here recently, complaining about refs is an excuse, not a solution.  If the Celtics sat around pouting about the way the refs call games, the Celtics would be sitting on couches right now.  Thankfully they don't pout and whine (too much) and up their game instead.
Celtics fan for life.

TP.  You hit the nail right on the head.

I have never seen another big man used so often in on-ball screens than Perk.

Here's what the refs seem to call and not.

When Perk and Baby and KG set a pick, if the they don't set the pick deep enough or if the cutter doesn't cut close enough, the C's bigs often throw the hip out. This seems to get called a ton, whether against the C's or their opposition.

Now, what I see a lot of other teams doing, especially the Cavs, is that when their pick setter sets his pick, they then almost instantly start rolling toward the basket or popping out away from it. Often they are obstructing the cutter's defender. This seems to seldom be called.

This is just my observation and opinion. Now, both things are illegal moving picks/screens but one seems to me to be called a lot more often than the other.

Agree with Nickagneta - the C's bigs (KG and Perk) both throw a hip check when the defender is going to get around the screen. If the ref has the angle - it looks blatant and gets called.

A lot of time it doesn't get seen and they get away with it. Sometimes they are in the position of actually moving when they screen, but that is sometimes the ball handlers fault.

I think Rondo baits the defender into going "over" the screen by not running off the hip of the screener (KG/perk/BBD).  Then as the defender goes to follow Rondo, the screener is forced to move out and hip check in order to get that separation.

Rondos most effective when the defender goes over the screen, giving him a clearer path to the hoop.

If Rondo was a better perimeter shooter, he would utilise the on=ball screen to its full advantage, thus avoiding potential offensive fouls for our bigs
