Utah:

Please explain your motivation in your trades, and whether you still would have made them in hindsight.

How do you match up, specifically, with Milwaukee and Golden State?

Question for all owners:

Please rate the top five teams other than your own team.

In my first trade the motivation was simple. I had a need for a SF and there were three that were rated so far higher than any others that I thought the drop down into the top pick of the 6th round from the 5th pick in the 5th round was well worth the price to pay to get one of them. The move from the 10th pick in the 4th round to the last pick of the third round allowed me to secure one of those SFs, James Worthy, a HOF SF and one of the top 50 at 50 players. None of the three SFs that I had targeted would have bnee there when it came time to draft so ultimately, this trade was worth it and I would do it again and again.

An earlier run on PGs had moved some talent down into the 4th round that I thought would never be there. Having traded my 4th round pick to secure my starting SF I tried moving a 6th, 8th and 12th rounder for a 4th and 13th rounder. My target was Joe Dumars. Again, another HOFer that was a champion and great defensive player. Ultimately, I would have liked to have kept Joe. But a situation arose where I could turn Joe into Shawn Marion and Jerry Stackhouse.

So the second and third trade results was Joe Dumars for Antawn Jamison/Carlos Boozer for Jerry Stackhouse/Shawn Marion. All in all, I like the Marion and Stackhouse combo best as I was able to secure McDyess at the PF position and I think he's much better than Jamison or Boozer and I think the Marion/Stackhouse combo is much better than Joe alone.

The last trade was just minor moving around stuff.

I liked the trades I made and think they shaped my team nicely.

Regarding how I match up to Golden State and Milwaukee, all I have to say is that the Jazz will run their stuff with maybe the most dominant physical presence of the era in Shaq and a plethora of MVPs, Top 50 players and Champions around him. I, like the other owners in this exercise, feel I have the best team. I think it nearly impossible for any team to defend my starting five given their dynamics. But Milwaukee and Golden State have their strengths and I wish them well.

Five teams other than mine, that I am intrigued by in no particular order, are Milwaukee, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Golden State and Portland.

Boo!  Demerits for avoiding the question!

I guess panelists will be left to their own imaginations regarding how Mark Price is going to guard Magic Johnson.

I love Charles Barkley, but if you could have made your own selection at #3, who would you have taken?

Are you happy with your Joe Dumars trade?

Honestly, I'm not sure who I'd take with the 3rd pick.  It would be hard to pass on Shaq or The Dream, but with the amount of talent on all of these teams I'm not so sure the importance of having a top flight center supersedes other positions.

Gun to my head answer:  Olajuwon because I like his game better.

answer to #2: yes, I'm happy with the trade.  I liked the players I ended up in the later round.  I'm not sure there was a ginormous dropoff from what I selected there, to the round I missed (7th?).

The only real drawback was losing a roster spot, but I like the 14 I have.

Yup

This should have already been answered in my write up. Terry Porter would be guarding Magic Johnson since I said he would be starting against bigger more physical PGs. In their head to head match ups during the era, Porter did very well against Magic.

In 10 head to head mat-ups during the era:

Magic 19.2 PPG, 14.4 APG, 7.4 RPG, 45.6% FG%
Porter 17.5 PPG, 9.6 APG, 4.0 RPG, 43.2% FG%

Given that Magic was an MVP during 4 of those matchups, I think he accorded himself pretty well.

A trade where both teams were happy with the results. Gotta like like that, huh Redz?

How many of those games did Porter's team win?

Weren't Clyde Drexler and Jerome Kersey the main defenders against Magic Johnson when the Blazers played the Lakers back in the day? Plus Magic was on Kersey and Scott on Porter for the Lakers.

Ah, Drexler is on your team too ... same scenario ... and Porter can cover Mitch Richmond effectively so he can slide over to the two defensively. Worthy could also spend some time on Magic defensively as could Shawn Marion.

I don't put a huge amount of stock in H2H matchups like that, especially since the two were rarely actually matched up.

As for Porter, in the early 90s he wasn't much of a defensive player.  He got much better later in his career, to the point where he was a plus-defender.  However, early on, that wasn't his game.

Utah is a great team, one of three great teams in this game, in my opinion.  Matchups are going to determine who wins among those three, and the GM who can best explain those matchups would get my vote.

Utah Jazz should win.
  • Shaq and Dirk will outplay their counterparts (Zo always struggled against Shaq's size and length + Malone can't stop Dirk's face up game).
  • The Jazz also have an advantage with Drexler versus Majerle + Mullin's cannot defend James Worthy.
  • Utah have another advantage with their backup big man when they bring McDyess into the game and switch Dirk to the center position against Vlade Divac.
  • The Warriors have a matchup advantage with their backup wing (Carmelo vs Marion).

Sorry  Dons but owners asking questions about other teams will greatly reduce the amount of combative banter I have witnessed in past games. A panelist or outside can ask a question but owners can't. They can only provide answers.
