Today's Referees are:

Dan Crawford
Home Team Foul % 48%
Road Team Foul % 51.9%
Home Win % 57.1%
Home Team Win % in Playoffs as Crew Chief:   83%
Dan Crawford has been a referee in the NBA since the 1984-85 season. Prior to the NBA, Crawford officiated in high school for 12 years, 8 years at the collegiate level (MVC and CCAC) and 4 years in the CBA (NBA development league). He has officiated 1,600+ regular season games, 190+ play-off games and 18 NBA Finals games. After one of the games in Chicago in round 1 last year, he was seen leaving the arena with his family all decked out in Chicago Bulls gear.

Dick Bavetta

Home Team Foul % 49.9%
Road Team Foul % 50.1%
Home Team Win % 56%
Dick Bavetta has never missed an assigned game in 32 seasons of action. He has worked 2,200+ regular season games, 230+ play-off games and 24 NBA Finals games. He currently holds the record for most games officiated and for losing the most foot races against overweight, out-of-shape, Hall of Fame forwards. Bavetta is best know as being Stern's "Go to Guy" and likes to officiate with an eye toward extending series to give the league more revenue. He also is known for trying to keep games close so that if one team gets a big lead over the other, the calls will start favoring the team that is behind. Despite dying 3 years ago, Bavetta continues to officiate games, which is a testament to his durability.

Ed Malloy
Home Team Foul % 49%
Road Team Foul % 50.2%
Home Team win % 59%
Ed Malloy has officiated over 230+ regular season games. Controversy between Malloy and Doc Rivers goes way back. In 2003, when Doc was with Orlando, Malloy called a technical foul on Andrew DeClercq for staring. Doc called it one of the worst calls he ever saw (boy has he seen a lot worse since then!)and he said that he felt that Malloy had been intimidated all night. Fast forward to the Celtics game in Utah this season when Malloy, no longer intimidated, called 2 quick technicals on Doc and ejected him. Here is Doc's version of those calls.

Quote
“I just told Ed [Malloy], please keep officiating the game,” said Rivers. “That’s all I said. I thought the play before [the technical] was a clear travel in front of him. So I just said, ‘Hey Ed, it’d be nice if you’d keep officiating throughout.’ He gave me a tech. Then I said, ‘That’s the best call you’ve made all night.’ Usually, it’s nice to earn them, but [Monday's technicals were] another bad call.”

For the record. Both Bavetta and Malloy were on the crew that officiated game 1 of the Miami series where 5 technicals were called and Kevin Garnett was ejected.

Interesting find.  I am not a fan of the conspiracy theories with refs, but I do think its interesting to know what kind of game to expect.

Anyone know where I can find stats on foul rates for these guys.  I am curious if they let teams play or not.

Good find FL...where'd you find this stuff?

I put together the reports using this site http://www.nbastuffer.com/referee_stats for stats.

This site  http://www.basketball-refs.com/ for profiles

And then do a google search for any controversy involving the given refs.

Awesome, thanks!

Here are some interesting stats from the regular season.

First, it appears Dick Bavetta did not ref a game in the first round?  Is that true?

Will the refs favor the home team?  Road team foul percentage (meaning 50% is the exact same amount of fouls for home teams and away games:

Ed Malloy - Tied for 33rd highest at 51%.  So slight edge to home teams, but basically in the middle of the pack

Dan Crawford - tied for 46th at 50.7%

Dick Bavetta - tied for 61st at 50.1%.  There are only 3 refs "better than him", and a few that actually favor the away team.

Do they get swayed into calling Techs against the road team?

Dan Crawford - 0.8 techs per game for the home team, and 0.8 techs per game for the away team

Ed Malloy - 0.8 techs per game for the away team, and 0.5 techs per game for the home team.

Dick Bavetta - 0.6 techs per game for the away team, and 0.7 techs per game for the home team.

So there is a slight bias for the home team for Malloy, but Crawford is even, and Bavetta actually favors the away team.

How do home teams do in general with these refs?  Home team point differential:

Ed Malloy - 19th highest at +4.4
Dan Crawford - 56th highest at +1.7
Dick Bavetta - 61st highest at +1

Do they let teams play?  Total fouls called per game:

Dan Crawford - 31st at 42.1
Dick Bavetta - 60th at 40.9
Ed Malloy - 76th (out of 77) at 39.5

So basically, the refs are not very biased towards home teams.  They call a decent amount of technicals, but are pretty balanced.  They generally let teams play, and don't call a lot of fouls.

I think this is a favorable draw for the C's.  They should be allowed to play the physical game they need to, and there won't be a ton of favoritism shown.

The C's will have to keep their heads though.  There are going to be no-calls both ways, and they cannot get in the refs faces, because they will T them up.

Did you notice the 83% home winning percentage in the playoffs with Dan Crawford as the crew chief?

I don't know if there is such a thing as favorable draw against the Cavs.   All season the Cavs have gotten favorable calls no matter who the opposition was.  LeBron will never get in foul trouble.  period.

Small sample size, and it put him middle of the pack (11th out of 27, since the home team wins a LOT in the playoffs.  Last year during the playoffs home teams have a 64% win percentage over 14 games as crew chief.

Nice breakdowns, FL and Chris.

Also supporting the Bavetta being a little more road team biased is that home teams are 27-37-1 against the betting spread. (I think using the betting spread is very helpful because Vegas is good at setting lines and there can be some misleading stuff happening with home/away stats because of league parity.) That rates Bavetta 61st out of 67 refs.

Crawford is 44th/67 and Malloy is 12th out of 67. http://www.covers.com/pageLoader/pageLoader.aspx?page=/data/nba/statistics/2009-2010/referee_ats.html&t=0

Favorable draw it looks like.

Sad state of affairs when we as fans have to worry about who the ref crew is going to be. But Stern's right, there is nothing to worry about.

This is indeed sad, not because of who the refs are necessarily, but because of how much truth was in what FL said (including the thick sarcasm).
