Interesting find. I am not a fan of the conspiracy theories with refs, but I do think its interesting to know what kind of game to expect.
Anyone know where I can find stats on foul rates for these guys. I am curious if they let teams play or not.
Stats are here http://www.nbastuffer.com/referee_stats
Awesome, thanks!
Here are some interesting stats from the regular season.
First, it appears Dick Bavetta did not ref a game in the first round? Is that true?
Will the refs favor the home team? Road team foul percentage (meaning 50% is the exact same amount of fouls for home teams and away games:
Ed Malloy - Tied for 33rd highest at 51%. So slight edge to home teams, but basically in the middle of the pack
Dan Crawford - tied for 46th at 50.7%
Dick Bavetta - tied for 61st at 50.1%. There are only 3 refs "better than him", and a few that actually favor the away team.
Do they get swayed into calling Techs against the road team?
Dan Crawford - 0.8 techs per game for the home team, and 0.8 techs per game for the away team
Ed Malloy - 0.8 techs per game for the away team, and 0.5 techs per game for the home team.
Dick Bavetta - 0.6 techs per game for the away team, and 0.7 techs per game for the home team.
So there is a slight bias for the home team for Malloy, but Crawford is even, and Bavetta actually favors the away team.
How do home teams do in general with these refs? Home team point differential:
Ed Malloy - 19th highest at +4.4
Dan Crawford - 56th highest at +1.7
Dick Bavetta - 61st highest at +1
Do they let teams play? Total fouls called per game:
Dan Crawford - 31st at 42.1
Dick Bavetta - 60th at 40.9
Ed Malloy - 76th (out of 77) at 39.5
So basically, the refs are not very biased towards home teams. They call a decent amount of technicals, but are pretty balanced. They generally let teams play, and don't call a lot of fouls.
I think this is a favorable draw for the C's. They should be allowed to play the physical game they need to, and there won't be a ton of favoritism shown.
The C's will have to keep their heads though. There are going to be no-calls both ways, and they cannot get in the refs faces, because they will T them up.
