Regardless of whether we'd like Deng or not, why would Chicago deal him to us?

It only makes sense for Chicago to trade him in one of the following scenarios:

1) To a team with cap space / non-guaranteed contracts.  This would allow the Bulls to clear his contract, and have enough space to sign two max free agents; or

2) To a team that has a departing free agent, in a sign-and-trade.

The Celtics don't fit under either of the above scenarios, unless the Bulls for some odd reason want to give Ray Allen a big deal.  I think the Bulls may instead look to another team that has space / a departing free agent that otherwise might not be able to attract talent as good as Deng.  Teams in that category include Minnesota, New Jersey, and Toronto (in a Bosh sign-and-trade).

I could definitely see a Kirk Hinrich/James Johnson for Erick Dampier and a second round pick trade happening. That allows the Bulls to waive Dampier, clear about $10.8 million off their payroll getting them awfully close to the threshold of being able to sign to max level free agents and could go after LeBron and Joe Johnson.

LeBron that way doesn't have to share space with another TRUE alpha dog like Wade. The Bulls starting five would be

Derrick Rose
Joe Johnson
LeBron James
Taj Gibson
Joahkim Noah

with Luol Deng on the bench as your sixth man coming in to replace Gibson and doing a ton of time playing the SF while LeBron plays the mismatch against PFs guarding him.

Scary but consider how much LeBron would love to take over for his boyhood hero in Chicago. With a cast like this, he could easily put up 6 titles in eight years like Jordan.

Well there were rumors around the deadline that they wanted to trade Ty Thomas and Hinrich for Ray and then sign him to an extension . They need 3 point shooting desperately . So if they can sign Bosh or Amare Stoudamire they would have scoring from the pg, sg(3pt shooting) and a low post game.

That could make sense for the C's if they could then sign mike miller for the MLE and have Hinrich and Deng coming off the bench

Chicago roster

Pg; Rose
SG Ray
SF: MLE
PF ; Bosh or Amare.
 C: Noah

Bos roster

PG: Rondo.   / Hinrich
SG: Miller.    / #19
SF: PP.          / Deng
PF: KG.         / BBD
C: Perk.       / anyone but sheed

I love your "anyone but sheed" thing.

having a rough night, made me laugh, TP for you.
CB Draft - New York Knicks
PG: George Hill / Nate Robinson
SG: Dwyane Wade / Gerald Henderson / Christian Eyenga
SF:  Grant Hill / Paul George / Earl Clark
PF:  Kenyon Martin / Jordan Hill / (Earl Clark)
C:   Greg Oden / Kurt Thomas / Hilton Armstong

Chicago is on the hook for $31.9 million next season, with the cap set at $54ish.

If Lebron/Bosh signs for $20 in his first season there, that leaves them $2-$3 under the cap, without an MLE or starting shooting guard.

If we (or anyone) sent them a package of Ray, Daniels and Sheed (for example) at a combined salary of $16.3 million they would have a starting shooting guard, some bench depth, and close to $7 million under the cap.

By the way, Deng just turned 25. Six months younger than Perk, 10 months older than Rondo, and an excellent defender.

For the record, the max contract Lebron / Bosh can get will be more like in the $17 million range, rather than $20 million.  That extra $3 million can go a long way.

Thank you for the clarification.

I think it makes my original point stronger. After signing their max guy, the Bulls start out with $5-$6 million under the cap - just a little less than the MLE.

That makes the $2-$3 million in additional savings on contracts vastly important.

The Bulls have their eyes on Dwayne Wade. I believe he is from Chicago and they probably think they have a good chance of luring him home. Wade and Rose in the backcourt would be devastating. The Bulls future is Rose and Noah and a max contract player. Deng and Heinrich are expendable.

Maybe Sacremento would be dumb enough to trade Tyreke Evans for these two players to the Bulls.

Sign and trade players have to be traded by themselves, and not as a part of a package.

Are you sure about this?  Wasn't Keith Van Horn signed-and-traded in the Jason Kidd deal as part of a package?

I was a lot higher on Deng a few years ago.  He stopped improving and always seems to be injured.

Time to check Coon.

Quote
For two months after receiving the player in trade or claiming him off waivers, if the player is being traded in combination with other players. However, the team is free to trade the player by himself (not packaged with other players) immediately. This restriction applies only to teams over the salary cap. (Also see question number 74 for a special case where players can be traded together in less than two months.)

That's the only restriction I found about not combining players in a deal, nothing about S&T having to go solo.
