Sure Tony Allen should be re-signed with The Boston Celtics, for another 1-2 years I think.

He's been healthy as of late..been very steady for us..maybe our best perimeter defender?

He's a year or two younger than Marquis.

Sure I'd like to see him back in Green.

The reason I would entertain bringing Tony back even though I can't stand his game is because this year, unlike ANY other year he has been in the league, he has been consistent in his performance on a game in and game out basis.

Honestly if Tony was shooting his free throws at his normal 73-75% clip, a case could be made that on a per minute basis, this is easily his best year as a pro. If nhis FT% was at his normal clip Tony would be looking at close to career bests in assists/minute, rebounds/minute, steals/minute, rebound rate, assist rate, TS%, and maybe PER. Add to that his defense and I think he's been our most consistently quality performer off the bench this year.

Unfortunately, this is about the first time that could ever be said about Tony so the question arises, is he performing like this because he's finally healthy and experienced or because it is a contract year?

That's a legit question.  Personally, I think it's more because he's healthy than playing for a contract.  His track record is that he plays hard all the time rather than pulling a Blount-like hustle for the $$$

TP, lol....

Well, I'm in Scal's corner too..his play against Matt Bonner in the San Antonio game a few months ago kept Matt from torching us from the three-line.

I try to find the good in every player.

I think he'll be offered a vet. min. without a doubt, and he'll probably accept.

No, he's playing like that because he finally understands what it means to be a professional.  That is, he eats right every day, gets his sleep, and watches a ton of game film on all his possible matchups before each and every game.  Before his season, he was, in his own words, 'just playing.'  Be it maturity (everybody matures at a different rate), his sports mortality, the fact that it's a contract year, or maybe his new girlfriend has got his head right, who knows, but he's finally got 'it.'

Given our lack of cap space and lack of guaranteed contracts in 2010 (only 6 so far), I'd assume the Cs look into resigning Tony.  We need to fill out the roster with somebody, and the MLE and veteran minimums at our disposal will only take us so far.  With TA's Bird rights, we are in a position to offer TA the most money of anybody, and given the economic climate and TA's lack of playing time down the stretch of the season, we'll probably have the most interest in him as well.  Danny Ainge and Paul Pierce are still big Tony Allen supporters and that will go a long way.

Of course, it depends on need as well.  If we use our MLE on a nice 2/3 that might negate a need for Tony.

TA has been misued and miscast these last 3 years in the Big 3 era, so an argument can be made that perhaps he'd be happier in a different location.  But familiarity goes a long way towards happiness and TA's been a Celtic his whole career and I expect him to try to keep it that way if it's up to him.
Folly. Persist.

He'd be a decent player at that cost too. Though Danny needs to add another big who's a plus rebounder and is athletic. Having Scal back as our 13th/14th man would be fine by me.

I think he will be back if he signs for the min.

Let's be honest, with the belts tightening and TA with a less then stellar track record, what team is going to spend more?

  • You say when......
I like that "re-sign Scal" one.....I mean I don't hate the man personally, I don't know him.....BUT, anyone who is the sixth highest paid player on this team, should work harder on his game and his body......One guy said TA should look around, that is a good point, TA could get a lot more playing time and freedom else where...He already has the ring......!  But I have seen a lot of really good things from TA, and i think people judge him a lot harder than they do others on our team. Other guys turn it over, you look away, TA does, you want to burn him....all guys on this team with limited minutes get judged the harshest...

There is only ONE thing that frightens people about not re-signing Tony Allen: he might actually GET IT...

The fear is that he'll leave and then somehow morph into a youthful Vince Carter...  Don't worry - I think the appropriate thought is something we all learned as a child: "Beauty is only skin deep, but stupid goes clear to the bone..."

Okay, well that's not totally the way it went...  But I think Tony Allen is the kind of player who will give you a flash of his brilliance...even string a few good games together.  But at the core of things, he's a dumb basketball player who plays out of control, never found a turnover he didn't become friends with and is an injury waiting to happen.

I'd let him go...  My fear is that Tony Allen + $$$$$ = very bad things...  I question, not only his basketball skills, but his judgment as a person.  I'd take Michael Finly for a cheap rate on a 1 year deal next season over a multi-year contract for Tony Allen.  You can find a wing player in the D-League next season who can give you just as much as Tony could...
