Rondo is an average PG. He can't carry a team a la Steve Nash, Chris Paul, and Deron Williams. He is not a scoring threat a la Chauncey Billups, Tony Parker, Tyreke Evans. Is he better than Aaron Brooks? (questionable) Is he better than Derrick Rose? (Noo) In couple of years, you can add Stephen Curry, Brandon Jennings, Jonny Flynn, Rodney Stuckey, and Darren Collison to list of guys that will surpass Rondo.

A nice building block, but not a franchise player.

Look, I'm disillusioned too, but Rondo is not the problem.  Sure, it would be nice if he could shoot like most of the guys you mentioned, but the fact that he can't doesn't make him an "average" point guard.

Not saying Rondo is the problem. But thinking somehow Rondo can keep this team afloat after the big3 is in fact illusional. The guy is average. Nothing about him is exceptional.

Totally agree. He has his moments were he dominates. They are too far and few in between. Mostly he is a liability on defense and it puts too much pressure on the back line.

You mean besides his passing, transition play, stealing ability, rebounding, and interior scoring?

He's perfect for the team he's playing on when everyone is clicking on all cylinders.

I don't know if I'd say 'average,' but he isn't exactly a lock as a perennial all-star, either. [note: that may be news to him]

Granted, he isn't the nifty passer that Nash is, or CP.  He seems to not be making great decisions on the break lately, either (turnovers/bad passes from forcing it).

His quickness was one of his strongest assets, but with all the new young stud PG's, that may not be as much of an advantage over other teams as it was thought to be.

He can't shoot well, which is a major, major limitation on the S/R, an NBA staple play.

He gets steals, but at the expense of good team defense due to his wandering and chance-taking.

Okay...I'm at a loss as to what part of his game is so far above "average" after all...

Yeah, he gets assists by finding guys in the half-court, but I'm starting to think it comes at the expense of ball movement, hurting the offense as much as it helps.

And his scoring is definitely up, many on those oddball, weird angled high lofts off the glass against tight pressure.  I'm not sure I like that, actually.

I wouldn't dump him, but he's certainly not a franchise player that a team gets built around, either.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
talk about baiting in a thread title.

Rondo is 4th in the league in assists, he's 1st in steals, and up until this season, he was one of the top 2 players at his position for rebounding.

Average? Come on.

Totally agree! Actually on second thought I disagree, you know why? I think Rondo half of the time is pure garbage. He missess shots, turns the ball over way too much, travels, steps out of bounds (like he did all night tonight.)

However, because he's "young and full of potential," he gets a pass. Apparently being young is all that qualifies you to be a good player nowadays.

Passing to wide open ray allen or KG, woow.... that must be amazing. Isn't he even grabbing around 4boards a game? There goes your rebounding argument. Leaving his assignment to get steals, yeah that smart. No wonder why opposing PG torch the Celtics. Interior Scoring should never be left to Point-Guards. That's the bigs job. In the playoffs he won't get too many open layups. Especially against shot blocking Centers and Power-Fowards. Rondo will struggle in the playoffs.
