But Scal might be a really big part of this championship run. Reason being is he is one of the better shooters on the bench with Eddie being traded. So now we have 3 guys that attack the rim in Tony,Nate, and Daniels. In the playoffs we can play sheed in the post so that way we could go with a team of maybe

Nate
Daniels
Scal
BBD
Sheed

Good rebounding unit and could Scal could spread the floor. He did step up fairly well in the playoffs last year and I think he could really help spreading the floor this year cause he hits the corner three pretty well and people will sag off of him. What do you think. Am I crazy or do you think it really could work.

Scal is valuable to this team because of his versatility.  He can defend several positions (depending on matchups), and while he does not bring a lot to the table, he doesn't take much off either.  You can count on him rotating correctly, making the right passes (that ugly inbounds pass notwithstanding), and generally being where he is supposed to be.

However, if you are counting on him to be anything more than a 12th man, who can step in if there are injuries or foul trouble, then you are asking for trouble.

Also, I think the main goal of the "buyout season" will be to find another shooter off the bench, so they don't have to rely on Scal for that role.

Absolutely if we can find a wing that can shoot (Raja Bell please please please) then yes I would understand but maybe i am saying to much but he can fit in for foul trouble guys I guess. Sorry!

In one of my Larry Bird books I recall Bird saying that the fans and media used to bash Greg Kite (I think it was him) all the time. But Bird said that he was so important to the team because in practice he'd keep all the guys on their toes. Said he worked there butts off defending them and going after them in practice. Guys like that know their rolls and probably do things off the court in practice and in the locker room that we as fans never see.

My gut tells me that Scals's real value is something we don't see. He's probably the same kind of guy. I actually think that Scal is better than what most teams have at the bottom of their bench. He's just a little over paid.

I will say this. I'd rather see him shoot a 3 then Sheed.  ;)
Peace through Tyranny

Scal will give you everything he has.  He is not starter material, but definetly a positive influence and in some cases a better matchup as a first big off the bench in some nights.

I hope he helps DA in the front office once he retires.

Scal is a low mistake player on defense - which is extremely valuable ... but he is not a rotation player - a floor spacer who can't shoot = not good times

Scal's biggest problem is he can't shoot anything but the 3 and play D. That is okay for short stints, but his mid size game is atrocious. It seems like every time he tosses one up from inside, I know it will miss.  Most NBA players are money when uncontested from 18 feet in. Not Scal. Especially from the side. Really struggles.

Honestly, the title is accurate.  Scal is an important part of this team, as he has been the last two years.  He was able to help the team stay above water for stretches the last two years, by stepping in for injured guys, and doing a respectable job.  That is absolutely an important thing for any playoff team to have.

Where he lost me is when he talked about having him in the regular rotation.

Scal has overall been not a major part of the team, but anyone who denies that he's stepped up in some moments and helped our guys come through is nuts.  I'm pretty sure we had a better record with Scal starting last year than KG, for instance.  And I remember him making Amare look like a fool quite a few times too.

And I'll always have love for Scal for his semi-intoxicated rant against the media after the '08 Finals.  From my mind to Scal's lips right there.

I agree and I actually hope Scal is back next year. I'm of the belief that a team can be hurt by having too much talent with lack of minutes to go around. The Celtics as currently constituted suffer from this a bit.

On a 15 man roster I believe 6 or 7 of those players should know that they're not going to get much time on the court and be comfortable with it.

Older veterans and young prospects fit into that mold.

I hope Scal is long gone and hard to find once this season ends.
