People are forgetting that we still have a roster spot open... bought-out options are right around the corner.

I don't see any buyouts who could step into our top-8 or -9 this year.  I don't think marginal upgrades to the deep bench will be what determines this team's success this year.

Of course, I don't think there was any trade that would have really improved our current chances that much.  What it comes down to is, if KG is healthy, we can compete with anybody.  If he isn't, then we're cooked.

it is obvious the amare talk was to drive down the price of jamison.....that allowed them to keep hickson....the cavs are stacked:

PG williams, west, gibson
SG Parker, Moon
SF James, hickson, jawad williams
PF Jamison, varajo, powe
C Shaq, big Z

Yeah...  They have a relatively short window, but they're the team to beat this year.

They already were the team to beat.  Now they're the team that will beat all others.

danny...no chance you win the east...time to think about the future of this team. keeping ray allen sets us back another 2-3 years
No no no.

Trading Ray Allen for someone who isn't a true young star is what would set us back for 2-3 years.

Getting Hinrich/Salmons/etc. pu pu platter would kill the C's flexibility going forward without improving the team.

We have Pierce's big expiring deal next year, and then KG/Sheed after that. Danny still have the same options next year, and the year after that.

Now resigning Ray Allen/Perk could tie his hands.

Why is that obvious? It seems more obvious that they where checking to see what the best deal was that they could get done. The Jamison deal was better and surer. They get to keep Hickson, and Jamison can shoot jumpers while Shaq is in the lane.

I think I can smell roasted Celtics in the air.  Not a pleasant aroma.

You have Hickson at the 3?  He's a 4.

The Cavs have a ton of weapons, to be sure.  2 guard is the only soft spot in their line-up.

The Cavs were smart to be patient at last year's deadline and avoid bad contracts.  They waited for a good buyer's market and got a great deal.

We'll need everybody to return to form to have a chance against this team.  Here's to KG's health, Ray's legs, Pierce's drive, Rondo's leadership and Perk's erstwhile finishing ability.

Who should Danny trade Ray for that is going to preserve our viability for those 2-3 years?

If a young star is available for Ray's contract, I'm sure Danny will pull the trigger.

what exactly do they gain by keeping ray? good chance he walks anyway this summer...boston isnt going to win the east with this team...boston looking at filling a ton of roster spots with no real cap space to do it

Agreed -- I don't see anyone cracking the Celtics top 8/9 either. Just deep insurance and covering some small cracks (lack of secondary wing with size). It won't have much of an impact.

The Cavs were willing to take on long term money in order to upgrade their team, so they were able to pull off a one-sided trade.

The Celtics clearly were not willing to do the same.  I can't say I blame them; no matter who they got in return for Ray, they aren't going to win if KG is playing on one knee.

Better to just ride the rest of the year out and then let the Big 3 expire / retire over the next couple of years.  Then go into the rebuilding process without any financial albatrosses.

very hard.  it'll be tough to make the transition as a fan from expecting the team to be a contender to seeing it as just an above average team on the decline

The worst thing you can do with a big expiring contract, is just trading it for the sake of doing something. Better to let it expire than tie your hands for future years in a manner that won't help your team.

See the Patrick Ewing trade.

It appears there was no option that upgraded our talent for this year on the table, meanwhile no young stars were available either. (Martin, Deng, Ellis, Iggy)

So the best move, is to keep Ray Allen and play the year out. We have an equally attractive asset next year, Paul Pierce.

You don't have to go that far, Ray is still an asset for us during free-agency. And we can also just resign him for a short contract, and have a decent asset to use soon after.

we are all assuming ray resigns in boston for cheap. i can see him going elsewhere for more money
