So I read today that in some weird contract thing Z has already been paid 75% of the money owed him this year by CLE.

If that's the case, then how exactly is the money going to match considering Amare already makes something like 5 mil more than Ilguaskas?

Doesn't the fact that CLE already paid the money to Z affect the money going out part of any deal?

The annual salary is the figure used. Not cash owed.

I believe you, but that makes no sense....I mean, if that's the case, then any team could just pay a chunk of an outgoing players contract so the team he's being sent to doesn't have to pay it.

Players salaries have to be paid in certain ways.

The best offer a player can get is to have is to have part of their salary paid as a signing on bonus (max of 20-25% I think) which in terms of the cap is then split evenly throughout the contract. So the cap charge is higher than the salary paid.

Then the players can be paid at different intervals. I think the max payout allowed is half -- the player gets their salary paid in full over two payments at certain intervals in the season. Not certain, but I think one happens in the offseason and the other sometime around mid-season.

Anyway, that's my rough knowledge of the contracts. The contracts can't be paid in full but there are ways (those two) of having different cap vs cash figures.

Edit: Part in red = not sure I'm remembering this right -- The signing on bonus can be a maximum of 20%. Not 25%.

There was a good article in the Salt Lake Tribune when Deron Williams and Chris Paul were getting their contract extensions.

The writers, Steve Luhm + Ross Siler blog, were comparing the ways New Orleans could make an improved max contract over what Deron Williams was likely to get. By altering the cash payments and including the signing on bonus. How to increase the initial payments and get Paul his money quicker + in larger amounts.

I thought I had it bookmarked somewhere but I can't find it. Must have deleted it.

Max vs Max-Plus.

There also are provisions that allow a player to receive up to 70 percent of his salary in one check every season. Kobe Bryant is the most famous example. He already has been paid nearly $15 million for this season, which had to be a hell of a check for Jerry Buss to write.

This is exactly what makes Ilgauskas so attractive.

On Big Z's contract

According to a source, Ilgauskas’ payment schedule included half of his salary paid last summer and the rest of the $5.75 million spread out over payments during the season. That means a team that would trade for Ilgauskas would be left with a relatively small prorated portion to pay off Ilgauskas’ remaining salary.

The most a team could save on such a transaction is $3 million, but every little bit helps. Especially because Ilgauskas has a kicker in his contract that would award him a $1.7 million trade bonus.
