I think BBD was most likely trying to parrot back something that Doc told him, i.e., "you need to be aggressive out there", etc. I'm sure he was given a pep talk about how big a part of the team he is, but how he needs to contribute more consistently. That's the message I think he's attempting to relay here. However, he doesn't necessarily say it artfully.
This is the impression I get as well. I think Davis puts his foot in his mouth way too often, mainly because he doesn't seem to understand how soundbites and quotes work. He is not good at talking in cliches, and everything he says gets taken out of context. I think half the time he is joking around, but it is reported as if it is serious, and a lot of time he is trying to, as Roy said, "parrot" what was told to him by someone else, and it comes out wrong.
For example, I feel pretty confident that the whole football thing was a joke. While I am sure he loves football, he was exagerating things, as most class clowns do...and it suddenly turned into him claiming he was going to be an All-Star, and then play in the NFL.
And I think the whole nickname thing was kind of a combination of the parroting, and joking. I think he heard all of the comments by Danny, Wyc, and Doc, about them not calling him Baby anymore, because he needs to act more grown up, so he made a joke of it by saying he wanted to change his nickname. But suddenly it was considered a serious thing, and he is getting criticized for talking about his nickname.
Basically, this guy just needs to stop talking to the media, because he does not know how to deal with them, and they clearly do not portray him how he is trying to portray himself.
