  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
In an article about the CBA, Ian Thomsen reports the following:

Quote
While some teams will stay away from making long-term player investments in these uncertain times, other owners will try to exploit it. "There are still two titles to be won [before 2011-12], and certain teams will throw caution to the wind to win them," a team executive said. "If you're the Celtics, are you going to worry about your future? What you're probably going to focus on is the here and now."

That's why the Celtics made a run last month at acquiring Kirk Hinrich, who has three years (including this season) and $26.5 million left on his contract, an outlandish amount for someone who would be Boston's third guard. But he would have resolved all of Boston's backcourt issues while extending its defense, and so the Celtics considered offering spare parts for Hinrich before the Bulls decided they needed a high-quality player or draft pick in the exchange.

What, Scal isn't a high-quality player?  I'm not sure what "considered offering" means, but if Wyc is going to spend the money to maximize this team's chances at a title this year, that's only a good thing.

There are lots of other interesting things in that article, too, including the strong possibility of a hard cap with the new CBA.

the first good C's news in a while. At least they are willing to bring on salary . This means we could be players at the trade deadline if a team is looking to dump payroll. Personally I would call Sacramento and make an offer for Fransisco Garcia he would be a perfect fir for the C's, a long defender who can hit the 3 like Posey.

Celtics get Hinrich and Tyrus Thomas
Chicago gets BBD, House, Giddens, Walker, and Tony plus a 1st and 2nd rounder plus trade exceptions to buyout Walker and Giddens

We get our bench PG, defender and sized shooter in Kirk, then we get an athletic, long PF that can fly and dunk and rebound/block.
The Bulls gets a good amount of cap relief, draft picks, and BBD
Can't stop, Rondo!

Good find Roy, thanks!

Definitely great news if it's true. Like rondonhondo said, it means we could get a good player at the trade deadline with our expirings. Now let's just hope Hinrich or other good "targets" won't get traded to a contender like the Lakers.

If we really made a hard run at Hinrich, we could easily end up with him at the deadline if no one else makes another offer.

i am shaking my head in disbelief...are you being serious?  there is NO WAY they hand us thomas in a deal like that.  i appreciate your spirit of hope here, but this deal doesn't get done, and if danny even asked for this the bulls would never answer their phone ever again...

This part of the article bolds well for us.

• Buyouts. "This might be one of the greatest buyout seasons ever," another GM said. "Think about your savings: You have a $10 million player, and you save $800,000 by buying him out so he can go play for a contender. That $800,000 is going to mean a lot to teams these days, especially if you're paying a luxury tax on that guy."
All of this is very fluid, and when you put it together it becomes harder than ever for franchises to choose between trying to win now while planning for the future.

Teams over the luxury tax -- Lakers, Mavs, Celtics, Knicks, Cavs, Magic, Spurs, Wizards, Nuggets, Suns, Jazz, Hornets, Heat, Rockets.

The only team on that list that isn't playing for something is the Washington Wizards.

There may be a good deal of buyouts but I don't think the luxury tax is going to be a factor.

See Pau Gasol trade, 2008.  While my initial reaction was the same as yours, I never say never anymore...

My point exactly. I guess I could make more off the wall trade ideas like Danny Ferry wants - Trade Big Z for an all star contract and have him bought out to return in 30 days. Replace "Ferry" with "Ainge" and "Big Z" with "Ray Allen"
Can't stop, Rondo!

I hope the owner takes the "lets win one this year" route.

But I think the team needs to play better soon for that feeling to continue within the owner.

chicago is not memphis...  the people in memphis are just happy to have a little basketball with their country music.  chicago is MICHAEL JORDAN - it's a little different.  i don't see the rest of league jumping up and down to help out the celtics, especially the bulls organization.

I'll believe this supposed fire-sale in chicago when i see it...

On the other hand, Chicago knows that if they get rid of Hinrich AND Salmons, they will have enough cap space this summer to sign, say, Wade paired with Chris Bosh... then they would have Rose/Wade/Deng/Bosh/Noah... pretty sick team if you ask me.

But it's true that the Bulls fans are not people you mess around with so it will be tough for the Bulls organization to say "screw the present, we will trade good players for nothing to sign good players this summer" to their fans.

On the other hand, I think fans would be OK with that scenario. The Bulls can still make the playoffs without Hinrich and Salmons (a lot tougher but still feasible) and they are in for a first round exit anyway so why not do a firesale, considering the big names they can sign this summer?

They have a serious shot at redemption after their terrible management of the past few years (the Ben Wallace signing stands out) and they would be dumb not to go for it. Let's hope the Celtics benefit from this possible firesale!
