I was hoping we'd get Maggette in free agency last year, but it didn't happen. Now he is stuck with a coach like Don Nelson, who is the antithesis of Doc Rivers; meaning he prefers to play the young guys and have the veterans come off of the bench. He benched Jamal Crawford, and eventually forced Stephen Jackson out of town.

Let's take advantage of their horrible situation in Golden State. Landing Maggette, who would be excellent off the bench for us, giving us a solid 20-25 minutes per game, and Anthony Randolph, who would be another solid post player for our future. I can envision him hooking up with Rondo for many alley hoops for years to come.

I'd like to leave Baby and Randolph out of the equation and do Scal, TA, Giddens, Walker for Maggette.  He'd be an excellent get for Danny.  He's a big physical swing guy like Pierce, and he's sure come in handy defending physical guys like Carter, Lebron, Kobe, and Artest.  We'd be completely stacked at the big positions and the swing positions, with the only possible area of concern being backup PG at that point.

If the deal really was scal, Ta, walker, giddens, Baby for Maggette and Randolph you'd almost have to do that deal.

1. Our window is now. The Lakers are stacked; Lebron is getting better and may improve drastically next year with a change of scenery: a pre-arranged union with Bosh or Wade or teaming up with Brookly Bound Nyets with Devin Harris, Lee, CDR and Lopez. Adding Maggette coming off the bench for players that have barely played so far this year would certainly make us better now and improve our chances in this window.

2. We've proven we're very good without Baby. He's a bit superfluous on this roster; nice to have around if another player is injured, but if KG or Perk is out for the playoffs, i think we're pretty screwed if Baby is getting big minutes. As such, I'd much rather be trying to develop a potential game changer like Randolph than a career backup like Davis as the 5th big.

3. Financially, it's ok. THough I've written a bunch about making a splash in the 2012 free agency market, this is realistically a long shot as Ray or pierce getting longer than 2 or 1 year extensions respectively ruins those plans. So who cares if Maggette's deal goes long since we're not free agent players for the foreseeable future anyway? Payroll is about 85 million now. That means we can assume ownership is okay with spending 85 million for a contender. subtract the 10.75 that scal, baby, Giddens, ta, walker make, then add the 10.75 that Maggette and Randolph make, back to around 85 mill. Next year, Rondo's extension kicks in at around 8 mil or so, but Ray's salary will be nowhere near his 18.75 mil that it is now; can't see him getting more than 9-10 on the open market as no teams with cap room are pining for a 34 year old shooting guard. Add it all up, and a roster of Rondo, Allen, Pierce, KG, Perk, Randolph, Wallace, Maggette, and fill in house-types for min contracts or a little above would have the same payroll as this year.

Numbers wise, the original trade won't work b/c of the Baby's BYC or w/e it is. It would take something more like

Tony, BBD, Giddens, Scal and House PLUS some draft picks*
(*two 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder)

Maggette and Randolph

If that were the case, I would say yes b/c Ray would play for less. I think that's a given. Pierce could help "a little" by opting out and signing for a longer cheaper contract. Hudson could get more minutes and work more with Ray on shooting, and Randolph could develop nicely alongside similar stars in KG AND Sheed. Maggette is talented enough to learn the game of team basketball b/c for the first time ever, he'd be on a good team.
We get a future PF and a 6th man for years, and GS gets some draft picks, a few good players for their system, and free up cap room. Sign me up please.
Can't stop, Rondo!

  • Rondo = Good
Golden State are a stupid organization and a badly constructed team.  But they aren't THIS stupid.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

Maggette?

But I think with the expirings we have, we will take advantage of a team that will blow up their team or try to save money.
