Just saw it on sportscenter update. It said the Sox will pursue Halladay. Great move in my opinion , it will likey take bucholtz and other prospects. I still think they need to go after a big power hitting bat

this has been covered all over the globe's website.

it will likely cost buch, kelly, + .  I dont think we will see it happen.

A deal for Halladay would likely require the Sox to part with Clay Buchholz and also either Daniel Bard or Casey Kelly -- or both. Together, those three represent the most talented pitching prospects in the system, leaving the Sox with little organizational depth.

It's far more likely, said a source familiar with the Red Sox' plans, that the team pursues free agent John Lackey (left). The Boston Herald reported last week that general manager Theo Epstein met with the agent for Lackey at the GM meetings earlier this month.

Further, new Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos is on record as saying that,  all things being equal, an AL East suitor (like the Sox) would need to have a clearly superior offer on the table than those coming from clubs outside his division. That alone may make the price prohibitive for the Red Sox.

I'm all for it. Would love Cabrera though.

This last point is key. Yeah, I would love Halladay, but I don't think he is worth a 'clearly superior offer'. The ball is not in Toronto's court since Roy has already told the Blue Jays that he will not re-sign there after next season. I still think they made an ENORMOUS mistake not trading him at the deadline last year where they could have gotten more.

When it's all said and done, if the Red Sox get him, expect Bucholz to be gone, but not Kelly or Bard. I just hope the Red Sox don't panic and rush this thing...

  • Thank you Eddie!
Theo should have had this done about 6 months ago, but good news anyway.  Unless they can get a major move or two like this done, it might be time to blow up this team's core for top prospects.  Yes, the Sox are a playoff team still, but there is NO ONE on this team as presently constructed I would fear if I was a fan of another contender.

this is just silly....

youk was 6th in mvp voting.  Bay was 7th.  Pedroia is no slouch.  Drew was one of the tops in ops.

and as for 6 months ago - the sox offer of buch plus more plus basically everything we gave up for VMart was rejected by toronto.

It must really suck. You guys went through a few years where you actually spent some money and still nothing came of it. At least for years you guys would finish a solid third behind the Sox and Yankees. Now TB is taking that role.

I don't really get this either. You say we are a playoff team, but then suggest we blow the team up? Anything can happen in the playoffs...Boston fans of all sports really sound pretty silly in these circumstances. How many cities wish they had teams like the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots (the Bruins are still coming along)...

I disagree with your assement. The goal should be championship or bust every year. If the goal isn't to win a championship then why waste your time watching. Teams should CONSTANTLY be looking to pick up the best players available and compete. That's why I've grown to respect Danny Ainge the last couple years. Thats why I respect the Yankees.

I agree. If the team can't seriously contend for a championship, blow it up. If they don't get the top players and take out the Yankees, then why watch? So that they can aim for the wild card every year and get trounced by the guys they could have had? If the sox don't get Halladay, the Yankees will, and it we will not see a world series for at least 6-7 years

Only 8 teams make it to the playoffs every year in baseball. It's not like basketball or hockey where 'most' of the teams make it. Just by making it to the playoffs every year, you show you are a championship contender. Yeah, I want the best players possible on this team, but I am not some insane person who wants to start from scratch if we don't get Halladay (for instance)...

We are VERY lucky to have the Red Sox here in Boston. They have consistently been able to compete against the Yankees. It is the one sport without a salary cap (and I am strongly for one), what are we going to do, trade Youk, Pedroia, Beckett, Papelbon, and Lester for 'prospects? That makes a lot of sense, right? Go talk to the Royals, Pirates, Reds, etc to see how trading their best players has gone.

I'm sorry but I don't consider a top 8 team a serious contender, I consider it an also ran. Top 4 or nothing, and they haven't been top 4 in a long time.  I suggest they should put up the money for players like Halladay and Texiera when they can

i agree with house. we don't have any hitters in our lineup who are feared by opposing pitchers. We have a lot of balance up and down our lineup which bodes well for making the playoffs, but in the playoffs you need some steel in the middle of the order.

I think VMart could be a feared hitter if he wasn't catching. but catching takes enough out of the legs over the course of the season IMO to make it difficult to sustain the same kind of presence at the plate.

If we were able to trade for Cabrera, it would totally change the complexion of our offense.

and like i said before, I would let Tek catch (at the very least two of the pichers) and move VMart to first.

then our lineup is:

Ellsbury
Pedroia
VMart
Cabrera
Papi
Youk
Drew
Tek
SS
<Lowell platooning at third and DH>

that's a fearsome lineup.

sign Lackey as a FA and our starters are:

Beckett
Lester
LAckey
Dice K
Wake

re-sign Wagner and our 6,7,8,9 is:

Okajima
Wagner
Bard
Papelbon
