How about we trade Tony Allen and JR Giddens for Rudy Gay?
I have read that Memphis is having a tough time agreeing to sign Rudy Gay to extension thus making him a restricted FA.  I know that the Grizzlies don't want to pay him that big of a contract which they will because after the LeBron,DWade, Bosh, sweepstakes is over a lot of teams will be willing to pay him the money he wants or close to what he wants.  Those teams that will make him the offer will have the cap room to sign him, thus the Grizzlies will then mostly be forced sign him or let him go.  I'm figuring they will let him go due to the fact they have O.J. Mayo, Marc Gasol, Conley, possibly Thabeet to sign for the future.

That being said it probably won't happen.  Although, think about it for a second.  If they are afraid to lose Gay, why not trade him and at least get something for him?  In Tony Allen, you get a slasher and a very good defender but injury prone. In JR Giddens you get a young player who has potential, but no idea how much with no playing time.  If they pan out, you could sign them to a relatively cheap contract, if not you free up some cap space.  That way they at least get something.

Now, for the Celtics if Rudy Gay's attitude doesn't mind coming off the bench for awhile(and eventually be a replacement for Pierce when he retires) this could work. This would be great for the future because then you can Rondo and Gay as the future for the Celtics.

Now how can the Celtics keep him?  Well, the way I understand it is if we trade for him now we will retain his Bird rights thus making it so could go over the salary cap.  If I am wrong please tell me.

The Grizzlies would never ever do this. Even if it's true that they want to give Rudy Gay away for the right trade cause they can't pay him, TA and Giddens won't be enough for them.

If they just want to clear his salary they can just let him walk and renounce him. No need to give him up for garbage.

If they really wanted to trade Rudy Gay they could get a better package than two expiring contracts attached to one injury prone marginal two guard and the 30th pick of the draft who's shown nothing so far.

Oh, and doesn't this go in the "Trade Ideas and Rumors" board?

Not exactly the most realistic trade I have ever read here at CB but given that Chris Wallace is the GM in Memphis, can it really be completely discounted?  :D

Welcome to the blog.  Trade ideas can be a tricky thing, but I don't think Memphis would have much interest here.  I'd absolutely do it, of course.

I have an idea, if we think they will take this trade, we should up the trade a bit.

I am thinking:

Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay, and Mayo for Scal, TA, Giddens and House.

This way, they get all expiring contracts and dont have to deal with that pesky job of building a competitive team.  IF we need to sweeten the pot, maybe we could throw in a first rounder.   ::)

As far as I can see, Rudy Gay is Corey Maggette, Part II. I suppose the proposed trade is a win on talent, but I'd be looking to make other use of our expiring contracts.

I think Chris Paul could be had for the right price.  The Hornets are not doing well, they just fired their coach, and the patriarch of the family that owns the team is seriously ill.  Before making any deal with the expirings, I'd have to be convinced that I couldn't get Chris Paul.

I will endorse any deal involving Turnover Tony and Giddens that returns a live human being.

And come to think of it, there are a couple of deceased NBA stars I'd move that package for.

Me too.

Let me add I might even take a vampire back. He might not be a living human, but at least he can suit up and move.

Really?  Remember Chris Wallace gave away Pau Gasol for a cup of coffee.
