Every once and a while there is a Bynum vs Perkins debate on this blog.  And lately a lot of us have been trying to gage Perkins salary value.

Please list your top 10 or 20 centers.

Things become very debatable after the top 3:

1. Howard
2. Duncan
3. Yao ---> injured this year

Possible names:
Bynum
Pao Gasol (could be rated as a 4 or 5)
Marc Gasol
Kaman
Okafor
Perkins
Oden
Brook Lopez
Bogut
Shaq
Horford (could be a 4 or 5)
Dalembert
Chandler
Camby
Noah
Ilgauskas
Dampier
Hilario
Biedrins
Barnani
Hawes
J O'neal
Al Jefferson (really should be a 4, but he still mostly plays 5)
Hibbert
Haywood
Okur

I think what I am driving at is that Bynum is definitely top 10. And if I am starting a team from scratch for just 1 season, I have a hard time keeping Perkins in the top 10.

I like his list. Oden has done nothing consistent. Some games he's good, some he's awful. He's not a top ten yet.

Okur doesn't rank top ten with me. Okafor is a void on offense, though i'd probably slide him into 10th or 9th and move marc down.

Bynum has to be on there, i'd probably put him over perk at 6 and move perk down to 7b. with shaq.

I think Lopez has to be in the Top 10 already or very close.  The guy is only in his 2nd year and he's already putting up some great numbers.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
1)Howard
2)Duncan
3)Pau
4)Bogut
5)Kaman
6)Perkins
7)Shaq
8)Okafor
9)Brook Lopez
10)Marc Gasol

I dunno if I'd stick 100% to those names but its pretty close. Oden is getting up there too.

Jefferson might play center, but he's no center.

Ya for sure.  If I am starting a team from scrath then I take Bynum over Perk.  But that's because he was more offensive potential (and defensive potential too I guess).  But as of right now I def think Perk is ahead.

It was tough picking Biedrins and Kaman over Okafor.  I just dont really like him to be honest.

  • Rondo = Good
Dwight Howard
Tim Duncan (better as a PF)
Yao Ming
Pau Gasol (better as a PF)
Brook Lopez
Nene
Shaq
Okafor
Al Jefferson (better as a PF)
Marc Gasol

I love Perk, but I don't think he's as all around talented as the guys on this list.  Some might put Shaq higher, but so far this season he hasn't shown that he deserves to be.  I only have him this high in respect for his previous accomplishments.  Perk would rank in the top 5 for defensive centers.  Camby would also be on that list.

Forgot about Brook Lopez.  He's gotta be top 10

Whoa dude.  I dont know how you could put Bynum up there with Shaq.  I guess I haven't seen him play all that much but to me his offense seems kinda forced.  And he doesn't grab boards like he should.

Follow up question for those rating Perkins clearly in the top 10, what should his new contract be worth?

If he is truely number 6, it seams like that should be MAX or near MAX. $70-80/5 years. Is he worth that?

I think his skills/performance fits in better with the 10 million per year club.

Again, I love Perkins. I want him to be a Celtic for life. I'm just trying to get a better gage on where he fits in the landscape of other NBA centers.

I don't know if you've seen shaq the last two years, but he is a liability in anything but one on one post matchups. he can't help you on fast breaks or transition defense, can't shoot, and his offense is falling off.

The list is based on right now, not 3 years ago.

I'm as much anti laker as the next guy, but bynum is a better player than a 38 year old shaq.

Over the past 2 years, Bynum grabs about 10 boards every 30 minutes. Thats an awesome ratio. His offense is forced. He's mostly a garbage man. A really big/effective garbage man.

Shaq is definitely a liability on certain teams.......Okay your probably right.  I cant come up with any sort of defense for Shaq being above Bynum.  He's just an all time favorite of mine.

But if it is just for one season, I still take Kaman or Biedrins over Bynum.
