Sure I would place Al at number nine. I based that off of Fafnir's good description of where Al is at Defensively.

Big Al's a load Offensively. Somewhat reminds me of Kevin Mchale down low in offense, but he is not there yet defensively. I predict he will get even better defensively this year with Kurt Rambis and Bill Laimbeer there to coach and mentor him.

Sorry I meant Mr October's description of Big Al

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I'm surprised Bogut gets absolutely no love.

High 50's % shooting, 10 rbs, 11pts, 2-3 assists...

he's a really sound center, kinda like Big Z has been since like forever.

Defense, IMO. Karl Malone was a great lowpost defender, too..he would not allow his opponents to get to their sweetspots, thus forcing them into bad shots.

Perk is great at this (forcing other bigs out of comfort zone).

here is what hollinger says about bogut's defense:
Bogut doesn't elevate well, but he's learned how to use his size very effectively at the defensive end. In addition to controlling the boards, he takes loads of charges and has become a fairly good pick-and-roll defender. His biggest liability at the moment seems to be defending post-ups. Although he can push his man away from the basket, he has trouble challenging the shots of opposing centers near the rim.

Good post, but I also based my opinion of Perk and other centers off of how those listed have done against Perk. Perk just slows them down. I don't know how Bogut does against other centers.

He is young as well. He has been injured a lot, too.

Perk has also gotten help this year from Shelden, Sheed and KG, so maybe I am giving Perk a "Smidgen" too much credit, but he is still the real deal to me. Worthy of top ten.

I like Bogut a lot. Maybe I would place him in Al's spot (9).

To me, though, Perk sold me his worth in Playoffs last year. Without his play, Chicago beats us last year.

Cool. I think we're in the same ball park. I think the differences between centers 8-14 or whatever are marginal. Big Al fits in there because he is such a load on offense. You pick nine, maybe I pick 12...

Anyway, its cool to get a gage on what the blog thinks of the center position in the NBA. We dont talk about them enough out side of Bynum, Shaq, Howard and Perkins.  ;D

I liked Bogut before he got injured and he has definitely shown a nice progression in his game since he has come into the NBA (kinda like Bargnani, even though they have totally different games). He hasn't quite returned to his old form yet and he is still on a crappy team. Until the Bucks get better and/or he shows he is semi-dominant again, he still can't make my top 10- but I do appreciate his game...

Would Perk be in the top 10 if the question was top 10 defensive centers?

I think he makes it either way.

He's kind of in the reverse position Bogut is.

Bogut is on a crappy team that doesn't rebound.

When Bogut is on the floor he's never less than the third best offensive option out there. When Perk is on the floor he's usually the 5th best. He plays alongside one of the best rebounding forwards of all time in KG, along with a solid rebounder in pierce, and one of the best rebounding guards in Rondo.

If he were on a crappier team I don't see any way he doesn't average 10 and 10, and he's already heralded as one of the best defensive centers in the league.
