Follow up question for those rating Perkins clearly in the top 10, what should his new contract be worth?

If he is truely number 6, it seams like that should be MAX or near MAX. $70-80/5 years. Is he worth that?

I think his skills/performance fits in better with the 10 million per year club.

Again, I love Perkins. I want him to be a Celtic for life. I'm just trying to get a better gage on where he fits in the landscape of other NBA centers.

Anyone who thinks Perkins is a hands down top ten center, care to chime in on his financial worth?

Top 5 centers make the max. centers who fit in around 10-15th best tend to make 10/million per year.

If Perkins truely is top 6, top 7; should he expect to make that kind of money (12-14 million per year) when he is a free agent?

1.  Howard
2.  Duncan
3.  Yao
4.  Pau
5.  Big Al
6.  Perk
7.  Shaq
8.  Marc Gasol
9.  Biedrins
10. Kaman

No Bynum or Okur? or Oden yet? How about Okafor?

I like his list. Oden has done nothing consistent. Some games he's good, some he's awful. He's not a top ten yet.

Okur doesn't rank top ten with me. Okafor is a void on offense, though i'd probably slide him into 10th or 9th and move marc down.

Bynum has to be on there, i'd probably put him over perk at 6 and move perk down to 7b. with shaq.

Good Discussion..

Perk I believe is better polished Defensively than Bynum, IMO. Bynum better offensively.

Is Gasol really a center? In the Lakers lineup he plays either the 5 or 4 depending upon matchups. Or maybe once Gasol comes back from injury Bynum will go back to bench?

Same with Duncan--Center or PF? Has played the 4 most of career.

Either way Perkins is impressive to me in that he has slowed down Shaq, Emeka, Tyson Chandler and Big Al so far.

Much credit to Clifford Ray of the Celtics for Perk's improvement. And Perkins is a hard worker himself and hard-nosed.

Reminds me of Parish somewhat in that he rarely smiles.

He might expect it but he sure as heck isn't going to get it from the Celtics and I find it far-fetched that anyone would toss him anywhere near even the low amount of your spectrum ($12 million).  Teams are immediately going to point at his numbers and go "No way".

1.  Duncan
2.  Howard
3.  Big Al
4.  Yao
5.  Pau
6.  Bynum
7.  Perk
8.  Lopez
9.  Shaq
10. Mark Gasol

But no Yao makes me wanna drop him off completely and put Kaman in at the 10 spot.

EDIT:

1.  Duncan
2.  Howard
3.  Big Al
4.  Yao
5.  Bynum
6.  Nene
7.  Perk
8.  Lopez
9.  Shaq
10. Nene

Pau Gasol isn't a center, and if he is then KG is a center.

Here's my top 10:

1. Howard
2. Duncan
3. Yao
4. Pau Gasol (he plays 4 mostly these days, but has spent most of his career at the 5)
5. Okur - NBA coaches don't vote this guy onto all star teams in the deep west for nothing.
6. Bynum
7. Marc Gasol
8. B Lopez
9. Kaman
10. Perkins

I think Big Al is a great scorer, and as a PF, I would rate him as top 6 or 8. As a center he isn't top 10 since he cant hold his own defensively as a 5. If he could, the wolves would win more games.

As a 10th best center, I think Perkins should collect a 10 mill a year contract from the Celtics in a couple of years.

The beauty of having a player of Perk's demeanor surrounded by tremendous talent. Because KG, Ray, Pierce, Rondo take away touches from Perkins he'll never rack up the offensive numbers to get teams to offer him a max contract. Meanwhile, his willingness to focus on making an impact on the defensive side, while constantly improving his offensive game, shows a commitment to the team that I think will allow the Celtics to keep him if the difference in free agency in 2011 between the C's and another teams offer is a couple million. I would not be at all surprised if the Celtics resign him for 10+ in 2011 (KG's last contracted year) and then he becomes a 20/10 player.

The sad thing is that Big Al is the best Wolves defensive big by a wide margin....

Is Kevin Love really that bad at defense?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I guess I will chime in, too:

1) Howard
2) Duncan
3) Stoudamire (he was a center for several years)
4) Yao
5) P. Gasol
6) Big Al
7) Lopez
8) Nene
9) Biedrins
10) Bynum

Next tier- Shaq, Camby, Okur, Perk, Okafor

I love Perk, but I would take all of the guys in my top 10 over him. For the current Celtics, he is a HUGE asset and I don't know how many guys play better defense than he does, but his offensive game is still very raw. There isn't enough love on here for Lopez, Nene, or Biedrins and I think too much for Shaq and Kaman.

For a future contract, I think Perk should expect about 5 years and between 35-40 million. Maybe I am underrating him a bit, but unless he is on at least a very good team, he isn't going to have the impact that he does here- where he just goes out and does his job.

He's not very good. He's an amazing rebounder, but his size and lack of lateral quickness does lead a disadvantage against most PFs.

He was a rookie, so I imagine he'll improve.

Second Group: Okafor, Noah, Kaman, Horford, Camby, Oden (once he stops fouling like an idiot)

IMO I would rank him based off of what he did for Boston during the 2008-2009 Playoffs. He was the ONLY lowpost Offensive and Defensive threat we had against Both Chicago and Orlando and he averaged something like 13 pts and 12 rebounds plus 3 blocks.

And that was last year.

He appears to be even more polished this year offensively.

And he is still young. He will continue to grow over next four years.

Money wise, he should command 5 yrs at about 35-40 mil, like PosImpos said.

And I would rank him at LEAST in top ten of Centers in NBA right now. Here's my ranking:

1. Howard
2. Yao
3. Shaq
4. Gasol (If he plays Center. He did a Great Job on Dwight in
   playoffs last year).
4. Lopez
5. Bynum
6. Perk
7. Nene
8. Biedrins
9. Al Jefferson
10. Emeka Okafor

No Duncan or Amare. Two of my favorites all time, but has played PF most of career.

Xmuscularghandi:

Sure I would place Al at number nine. I based that off of Fafnir's good description of where Al is at Defensively.

Big Al's a load Offensively. Somewhat reminds me of Kevin Mchale down low in offense, but he is not there yet defensively. I predict he will get even better defensively this year with Kurt Rambis and Bill Laimbeer there to coach and mentor him.
