A lot of these things fit very closely with NBA fans' suspicions about the referees, but some of them are a little too off-the-wall for me. Bets on waiting the longest to call a foul? That seems unbelievably callous and unprofessional, and like something the league would reprimand referees for (not the bets, obviously, but not calling clear fouls early).
Superstar treatment is not news, nor is the refs being aware of stars in foul trouble, though I don't know if they'd discuss it so openly on the court.
What's interesting to me is that some of his specific allegations could be statistically tested: Bavetta preferring closer games, or differences in Iverson drawing fouls when Javie vs Crawford was reffing. Someone will probably do this fairly soon and I'm really curious to see the results.
I also do believe Bavetta is in some fashion crooked, regardless of whether Donaghy's specific allegations are true. Whether it's for the league's sake or for his own personal interest in a closer game or a longer series, he's been associated with far too many big games with questionable reffing to be coincidental. Donaghy's a scumbag, but Bavetta should've been out of the league a long time ago.
