You're assuming we can give him away for nothing. Which I doubt, since he's an RFA, we're going to have to give away something big and take on a larger contract. Probably Rudy Gay + Crap Contract for Ray Allen.

Something I'm not willing to do.

If we were going to try to land Rudy Gay about the only combo of players that we have that would entice a trade would be a trade like this:

Boston sends: Rajon Rondo, Glen Davis, J.R Giddens

Memphis sends: Rudy Gay, Mike Conley

Rudy Gay sucks.. He still hasn't developed his mental status from UConn and he's the definition of a black hole on offense. His defense isn't anything to write home about, either. I guess he can jump, though. People love them jumpers. See Gerald Green and Kedrick Brown.

Ok, sucks was a little too harsh. I'd take him, but not for Perk or Rondo. He isn't worth nearly that much. They'd have to include a top-2 protected pick for Perk to get me to bite, and Rondo IMO, can't even be had for that.

I don't think its realistic that we could get him.  Regardless Memphis' past incompetence, they have managed to collect a few cheap good young pieces which are so important in today's NBA climate.  Getting high quality talent at a low salary is one of the most precious commodities that an NBA team can have, especially with the economy the way it is.  Rudy Gay at just over 3 million for the year is amazing when considering that he averaged 19 pts, 5.5 rbd, 1.7 ast, 1.2 stl on .453 fg%.  They won't give that kind of value away for nothing, and unfortunately I don't think only expiring contracts are enough bait. And since we cannot offer not even close to comparable young talent in return for Gay, that makes this deal closer to a unrealistic dream than a rational possibility.  You'd also have to make sure that he was okay with going from being the 4th option on a bad team to the 6th or 7th option on a good team.  If his goal is to have his play earn him a big salary he might not like a suddenly reduced role.

Just my opinion.  But yeah, it would be awesome to get him.

Rondo is worth more than Gay and Conley by himself.  And I'm the guy who started the TRADE RONDO thread before Danny started shopping him.

Having said that, if Rondo becomes a clubhouse problem this year then a memphis trade would be...

Rondo
for
Gay, Conley and an unprotected 1st rounder

Except there are salary ramifications that would mean having to send other bodies to match Gay and Conley's salary. maybe Scal instead of Baby but I would guess that probably wouldn't enough. I think you are placing way to much value on Rondo over two very talented young players in their own right in Gay, who has been a 20PPG scorer while pulling down around 6 RPG for the last 2 years and Conley, who had a last three months of 2009 where he averaged somewhere around 15 PPG, 6 APG, 4 RPG, 2 STPG, with only 2 TOPG while shooting about 48% FG% and 40% 3PTFG%.

If Rondo can't be extended and it appears his ego, cockiness and stubbornness become more of a problem, I could think of a lot of worse options they could get than a Gay/Conley package who they would still control for 2 and 3 more years respectively at a reasonable price.

Only if Rondo becomes unbearable... Gay doesn't strike me as being a winning player any time soon.  I think he's in the establishing himself and the numbers he can accumulate stage in his career.

The numbers trade:
Celtics get Marko Jaric and Rudy Gay.   Keep Sweetney.
Griz get BigBaby, Scalabrine, Tony Allen and draft picks

Why for Boston? We get a future Pierce replacement, get rid of Tony and get talent in return.

Why for Memphis? Dump Jaric's salary, get draft picks, AND move on from a disgruntled star on a rookie contract.

Rondo, Marquis, Hudson
Ray, House, Jaric, Giddens
Pierce, Gay, Walker
KG, Sweetney
Perk, Sheed, Sheldon

We could even look at getting a 3rd team involved with Jaric's contract and taking a player like Camby,Songaila, or Ramanovic
Can't stop, Rondo!

Rudy Gay is worth way more than that.

The fact that he's on a rookie contract is a good thing from their perspective.

He didn't like being the second option on Memphis, what makes people think he's going to accept being a fourth or fifth option here?

Sometimes I make the assumption people would rather have rings playing next to legends not far from his college than some extra personal glory losing a lot in Memphis, but sometimes it's a bad assumption.

He really should look down the line and realize he wouldn't have to wait long before taking over for Ray Allen and eventually PP.

I think he'd be fine with winning rings, if he got paid.

When we were shopping Rondo, I'm sure Gay came into the discussions for what would have been the Rubio pick. If they didn't take (for argument's sake) Rondo (and scraps) for Gay (and a pick) then they wont take anything else we could offer them.

Yeah, but at the time the more valuable commodity be thrown into that Rondo deal was considered the #2 pick because the Celtics could get access to Tyreke Evans or Ricky Rubio, who were both considered by Danny as franchise superstar PGs. Now all we are talking is Gay and Conly  for say Rondo, Scal or Baby and Giddens. I think that would be palatable for both sides.
