From the Simmons NBA Preview:

Quote
15a. Rudy Gay
Gay was miserable last season, and that was before Iverson and Randolph showed up. The Grizzlies didn't sign him to an extension. He's the fourth option on a bad team. Right now, he's the sneakiest trade asset in the league. You know what's going to happen in January, when the Grizz are 7-23, Iverson and Z-Bo aren't speaking, Mayo is complaining behind the scenes and Gay looks more bummed out than Vivica Fox when Larry David told her, "Yeah, I'm going to need you only for the first two episodes"? You will be able to get Gay for the right price. Just save the Grizzlies $3 million, give them someone half as good, take one of their bad contracts as window dressing and throw in a No. 1 pick so the deal looks better than it is, and Chris Wallace is going to say, "I should probably shop this around, but screw it, I'll just panic and say yes."

At the trade deadline, is it possible that we could acquire Rudy Gay from the Memphis Grizzlies? Would it be a good idea to begin with? Are we set at the wings or would Gay be a good addition?

Thoughts?

Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Simmons is wrong; Rudy Gay has a lot more value than a salary dump.  Chris Wallace may be a terrible GM, but I don't see him giving away Rudy Gay.  If nothing else, ownership learned its lesson with Pau Gasol.

Sure it could work I guess. Lets get Gerald Wallace also. I would love these players on this team. But the ? is would their teams hand them to us like some teams hand players to the Lakers for nuttin. Cuz Scal and T.A. won't cut it.

Yes he would be nice. He seems to kill the C's everytime they play them. Danny said the same thing about Daniels when he got him. So when is he gonna go after Wallace. Cuz that man was born to be a Celtic imo.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
We don't have anything to offer them without hurting our chance at Banner 18.

You don't think acquiring Gay would improve our chances at getting banner 18?

Does Scal, TA, Baby, and a 1st rounder for Gay not sound good to you?

Toss in Walker or Giddens as well and we get something very useful back.

I would think so too, but never say never when Chris Wallace is involved.  Might be worth a look, but I don't know how we do it without crippling our frontcourt depth, which is what really hurt us last year.

If we use both Baby and Scal to get him, we're losing our 4th and our 6th options for the front two positions. We then bring in Michael Sweetney, and use Shelden in a more advanced role.

we lose something in baby, but we get a whole lot better overall with gay.

Remember a few things;

1. Rudy would very unlikely play hard for any team unless he is guaranteed a good extension.

2. Rudy is also one of the worst passers in the league. He is in my mind Andre Iguodala without any of the passing, which would work terribly within our offense (and this is not based just on the fact that he's been on a bad team, he simply refuses to pass or is bad at it). For someone to have a less than 1:1 turnover ratio, without even having staggering turnover numbers is...horrible.

Also, Rudy Gay is paid very little since he's still on a rookie contract. So there is very little tax relief we can offer, and it would have to be in the form of taking another large contract, as well as draft picks

I'm not saying you're wrong, GKC - the stats don't lie - but Rudy was billed as an very good passer coming out of college.  I think his lack of passing now probably has more to do with the team than his own ability.

I get the feeling Gay's ego would keep him from accepting a backup role on a team.  If he would accept it for a few years, though, I'd love to have him.  He could be our backup 3 for the next two years or so and could take over for Pierce when he's no longer our starter - a legit future building block to add to Rondo and Perkins.  I also think KG's influence could do wonders for him, since the biggest negative on him coming out of college was inconsistency with his effort level, and that doesn't seem to have changed after watching him a bit over the last couple years.

  • Rondo = Good
Where would he get his minutes?  If he were a swing forward that could play PF and back up KG as well as Ray, that would be one thing.  But there really isn't any room on this team for bringing in big name guys, unless we trade away key bench guys (House, Daniels, or Wallace) or one of our starters.  Both of those options should immediately sound like terrible ideas (because they are).
