I apoligize if there is already a topic, I didn't see one.  If there is, merge freely.

First, the NBA has officially changed the travelling rule

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4563546

Here is the ESPN article http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4563605

And the actual URL of the website http://www.nba.com/videorulebook

In my opinion, this is a good step by the NBA in helping demystify there own rules, but I hope it's not like the NBA TV show where they had Ronnie Nunn explaining questionable calls.  I remember him pointing to video evidence and explaining things that just weren't there  ::)

Of course I'm not a fan of the travelling rule, as it is essentially a rule change justifying not following the rules for so long, but at least it is official now.  I don't think it will really change how the game is played since it essentially has been in effect for ages.

This makes me seriously upset.

The new rule reads, in part: "A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball."

Seriously, this is awful.  Terrible.
God bless and good night!

So... the NBA is eliminating traveling now?  :o

It's pretty much how the rule has actually been applied for the past 20 years, so I guess it makes sense that they codified it, rather than having the refs basically ignore the rules.

I don't necessarily like it, but gain, it's been the norm.  Two steps is okay, three isn't.

So they're just putting in writing what's been common practice.
Yup

I was honestly surprised that wasn't the rule already, since that was pretty much what I was taught growing up and how I've seen it called.

Absolutely ... I don't like it either, but they've been allowing this consistently now for many years. Drives me crazy, 'cuz it was a big deal when I was playing, but what can you do? By doing this, they're just validating a rule already in common practice.

Taking two steps, after the dribble, in coming to a stop, has never been OK Roy.

They just made it OK.
God bless and good night!

Next up: rewrite the palming rule

Something like:  Palming is ok to do.  Palm to your heart's content.
Yup

Seriously let's be clear here.  Two steps was never explicit, but, the way it has been called is that if you pick up the dribble, you can take two steps if and only if the second step is a fluid part of a "finishing" move (i.e. shooting or passing).

This new rule allows non-fluid two step movement (i.e. "coming to a stop" "upon completion of a dribble".)

Theoretically now, a double drop-step is now a valid post move.  Ugh
God bless and good night!

Nope.  Somebody just beat you to the punch, and we merged it.

Well let the record state that Brick James thinks the league is succumbing to Le Crab Dribbler and is actively ruining the game of basketball.

May Dr. Naismith's soul be cared for during these tough times.

LOL, two steps is ok unless you are Dwayne Wade or LeBron James, in which event three steps are perfectly acceptable, and sometimes even four.

Terrible move. It will hurt the US in the olympics and world championships, where the international rules are different.

Hah, Brick, TP for you since I'm with you on your opinions on the matter and I inadvertantly stole your thread ;-)
