Nope.  Not with his recent health issues, and his long term contract.  It's just way, way too big of a gamble.  Plus, Gilbert just doesn't seem like an ubuntu guy to me.

It's a very big assumption though. I would be willing to bet that Ray plays in more games than Gilbert does this year. The guy just can't stay on the floor. The more I think about it the more I think I wouldn't do it. Especially considering just this year alone. I think we are in a much better position this year with ray than if we had Gilbert just based on chemistry alone. Also Ray is an expiring contract anyway so if we wanted to we could just let him go after this year. I'm not sure what Gilberts contract is but i think it would be risky to take it on if it is a few years or beyond.

Well, I'm not merely talking about this year solely. He has a long contract, and that's what I'd be more worried about to tell you the truth.

Yeah well I guess that answers the question. He wouldn't really be an upgrade this year even if he was healthy and the length of his contract would make that trade even worse.

Now, that's just a ridiculous thing to say. If he was healthy he could very much be an upgrade. And if he wasn't an upgrade, by how much would he be a downgrade. In all, the window of opportunity would increase with him and that alone should make it worth it. What is now considered a 2 year window by many, could easily become a 5+ window.

I think on pure basketball terms Danny makes the deal.  But trading Ray's expiring deal for Gilbert's long term deal, coupled with Gilbert's injury problems...there's no way, Danny values financial flexibility too much.

Well I started this thread and I wouldn't do it.  Even if 100% healthy, Arenas would take away all of their financial flexibility for at least 4 years. Plus they'd have half of their cap invested in two small backcourt players, assuming they resign Rondo.

Also, Ray's expiring deal gives you flexibility at the deadline.  If Charlotte's or New Orleans' season goes into the toilet (either might happen) you could get a very good package for Ray, including draft picks to help reload after KG and Pierce retire.

If Washington offered an unprotected first rounder along with Arenas, I would reconsider. There would need to be a major sweetner like that to induce the Celtics to take on all of that salary.

count me in the 'no way' catagory. ray fits his role to a 't' and we need the financial flexibility his deal will provide. meanwhile, arenas' hibachi has been in an igloo for a couple of years now while he counts his cold cash...

Players that can score while holding the ball all the time aren't that rare.  Sure, Gilbert is great at it.  But what Ray does is score without needing to handle the ball every possession.  That's far harder to find.

Plus I think Arenas has too much ego for this team.  Way, way too much.

I would take that offer any day of the week...expands our window, Ray has been great, but in the playoffs I know he made some great shots, but if he produced 15-17 ppg as we all tought and expected he would, we wouldn't be in a position to make shots for our survival.
