On the court, the two biggest differences:  1) Delonte is an excellent shooter, and Tony is legitimately terrible; and 2) Tony averages twice as many turnovers as Delonte.
Plus 3) Delonte West has the coolest tatoo's. ;D


If Delonte has a substance abuse problem, he needs help. I dont think you can chalk this up to bad judgement or immaturity like some other guys we have dealt with. I believe Delonte is reclaimmable, admittedly that is just a gut feeling. The Celtics may be a 'safe' environment for him. If we can help him recover and he contributes off our bench, the rewards would be huge for us and him.

That said, Cleveland will not dump him too quickly. They need him.




More often than not, Delonte has been Cleveland's second-best player once the games start really counting.  I agree, it sounds like this is a serious, physological issue with Delonte, not just a kid who needs to grow up.  They'll do what they can to get him some help, but they aren't letting him go.
No sounds "like it", there have been a couple articles out right stating that he's bi-polar. He just needs to work on managing his condition with his support system, which is very tough to do when you're a young NBA player....

On the other hand, Danny gave Tony a new two year deal, even after his association with a violent crime.  Of course, it seems like Danny regrets that decision, although I wonder how much that has to do with Tony's performance on the floor, rather than his off-court activities.

(Also, of course, the team signed James Posey after he had some issues with drinking and driving, as well.)

Wasnt aware of those two, when did Posey have that problem, I dont think I ever heard about it.

The guns to me are more an example of his manic behavior. He definitely needs help, but I don't think he should be called a "druggie" or "criminal".

Mental Illness is a serious problem, and it shouldn't be shoved into those categories or stigmatized.

He got a DUI and was suspended for it IRC.

It's interesting, Delonte being associated with guns at this stage.  I remember a forum topic from when Delonte was still in Boston, where one of our members said he was sitting near Delonte and Perk in a restaurant, and heard them talking about the guns they had recently purchased.  Sadly, we lost that thread when our archives melted so I'm a little short on the details, but it's something that stuck in my memory.

Of course, it's no surprise that a young man has a fascination with guns; most of my friends own handguns and enjoy going to the shooting range.  What most people don't do, though, is go out strapped with multiple weapons.

Yeah, this is my issue with signing someone with West.  He clearly has some real mental issues that could certainly haunt him going forward.  Its not a matter of him being a criminal, or making the team look bad.  I would just be genuinely worried that he will just suddenly not show up, or do something crazy.

A lot of times mental issues get worse over time.  I hope Delonte doesn't follow that trend like Marbury/Vin Baker, etc.
