According to the Boston Globe :

Quote
Marquis Daniels has signed with the Celtics, who are expected to make an announcement on Tuesday, according to a league source.

Daniels will earn a one-year biannual exception contract worth $1.99 million. The Celtics had attempted to increase Daniels' salary with a sign and trade deal.

I'm glad that this story has ended, and glad to welcome Daniels in Boston but I'm really disappointed that we have him for only one year... the search for a backup wing will continue next summer.

Depends on a lot of things, if we win a title and he's a big part of it he'll probably want to get paid like Posey. But you never know what will happen.

Remember all the Powe/BBD predictions throughout last year, especially after KG's injury. You can't project that far into the future.

It's fine that we only have him for one year... we'll see how it goes. If he falls on his face while here, at least we aren't tied-up with him. If you would've told me that we would be landing Daniels for the bi-annual, I would've been ecstatic. The only thing that makes this bittersweet is knowing that the possibility that we could've locked him down for more years if things had gone our way.

But all is not over yet, we've retained all our trading assets. Let's see what that amounts to as the season continues.

Our long national nightmare is over and the C's will finally be signing a guy that will be making 1/2 of BBD's salary....

Remember that when he struggles from time to time.  The guy is here to provide some depth.

Good luck Marquis.

With college football starting Saturday, it's hard for me to cheer for anybody from Auburn in anything, but I am thrilled that we have him and that this is over.

True but Big Baby did get just about what everyone expected him to get which was right around $3 million and if Powe didn't get hurt and played in the playoffs, he might have gotten close to an MLE contract. Portland would definitely have thrown money at Powe if he was healthy.

So I don't think it's unreasonable to say that Daniels is probably only here a year given that because of salary cap restrictions the best offer he can possibly(realistically) get from the Celtics would be a 4 year/$11 million deal. And he wouldn't even have to average 14 PPG to do better than that with the exposure he'll get.

Good for the C's and good for Daniels.  Makes this a very low-risk signing for us; if he doesn't work out, he's a trade chip at the deadline.  Be nice to have him locked up at what ought to be a below-market salary for longer, but that's OK.  All that matters right now is 2010.

Daniels doesn't get locked into a long-term deal at such a low salary; if he's a key bench guy for us and puts up comparable numbers to what he did last year (with a lot more publicity), he could potentially command a decent-sized chunk of someone's MLE next summer.

I'm assuming the fact that this is only a one-year deal doesn't change the fact that we won't have the LLE available next summer, right?  Is that exemption every-other-year, regardless of contract length?

Bulpett, the guy who originally broke the story is still not confirming it is only a one year deal.

Sources told the Herald yesterday Daniels will sign for the bi-annual exception. The deal will begin at $1.99 million and can be for no more than two years.

Guess we will have to wait and see.

I don't mind signing Daniels for just one year as that's pretty much our championship window.  My big concern with it, though, is that Daniels will play with an eye toward his next contract instead of doing whatever he can to contribute to a championship.  Have to wait and see I guess.

True, but if he's not fitting in...  he's a very tradeable contract.  If he's not the answer, then maybe we re-explore a trade for Nochioni or someone like that, we'll have one more expiring contract to work with.  So, I don't see that as a huge negative.

I don't think these are two conflictual interests. On the contrary, if Daniels wants a big contract, he will perform as good as he can and thus help us winning a championship.

We know that he's going to be motivated and productive but I hate the fact that he could do us a "James Posey" next summer when we will have many more questions to resolve.

If Powe was healthy, he would've been restricted. Baby was restricted, which deflated his value a bit. This year in particular, on the eve of one if not the most anticipated free-agency class in NBA history made it quite hard for players to find contracts at the expected value. This was particularly important for players seeking multi-year contracts, and restricted free-agents can only get offer sheets for multi year contracts.

I think that will change next year, once the big names come off the board and everyone notices that they've been planning for nothing.

The Rebs.  Is there a better coaches name out there than Houston Nutt?  The man needs no nickname.

By the way, are we giving Marquis a nickname?  How about "The 3 Month Wait"?   ;)
