So has anyone confirmed this story yet, or are we still just going on Bulpett's source?

The Globe confirmed it today:

Quote
Free agent Marquis Daniels has signed with the Celtics, who are expected to make an announcement today, according to a league source.

Daniels will earn a one-year biannual exception contract worth $1.99 million. The Celtics had attempted to increase Daniels' salary with a sign and trade deal.

Daniels, 28, has averaged 9.4 points per game in five seasons with Dallas and Indiana. Daniels averaged 13.6 points in 54 games for the Pacers last season, missing several games late in the season with a wrist injury.

But Daniels has recovered from the injury, according to his agent, Glenn Schwartzman.

"Indiana was out of the playoff picture, so they shut him down," Schwartzman said. "He could have played a week or 10 days after the injury but they didn't want him to get hurt."

The Globe has been wrong on salaries before, but if it's only a one year deal, that's slightly disappointing.

But we knew it was going to be a one year deal. That is why the C's worked so hard to get a sign and trade worked out, they wanted multiple years.

it could have been a 2 year deal for the BAE - but it sounds like Daniels and his agent wanted either a larger deal for multiple years or one year deal with the ability to get a higher salary next year on the open market

probably a smart move for Marquis with all the money that will be freed up next year for free agents

I'm not sure that we knew it was going to be a one year deal.  An LLE deal can be for up to two seasons, and I didn't see any sources saying that Daniels would only agree to one year at a reduced salary.

The attempt at a sign-and-trade just as easily could have been to get Daniels more money in a three year deal, etc.  Plus, in the long run clearing Tony's salary would have saved the team money.

Regardless, the team will be able to give Daniels a 20% raise next year, meaning we can give him around $2.4 million without having to use our MLE.  It's slightly disappointing, though, that we were forced to use the LLE (which can only be used every two seasons) on a one year contract.

(However, the Globe has been very wrong on salaries before, so this could be off.)

I always read the situation as that we'd sign him to a longer term deal if we could do a sign and trade for more money. If we couldn't it'd be a one year, or one year plus player option deal similar to House's deal.

It wasn't a certainty but it was the only scenario that made sense. If Daniels was willing to sign for two years at the BAE why work so hard to sign and trade?

Which is why this is what I thought would happen.

But we need to be in one year at a time mode with the C's. So I'm not going to get worked up over it.

I hate the fact that it could be just a one year deal. First, we waste a contract we can only use every other year on a one year deal. That's not good if Daniels signs elsewhere next year. Second, we may not even get a 2011 LLE because there's still a possibility we could be below the cap(I know, remote, but possible) so we should have tried to maximize it's effectiveness by getting a player locked up for two years.

Problem is if Daniels does well and gets good exposure with a Championship team, he's gone. What's the best the C's could offer him next year, a 4 year-$11 million contract? That's not keeping him here if he goes for a 8-10 PPG, 3 APG, 3 RPG type season coming off the bench for a champion.

And then next year with just the MLE we are trying to:

Replace the backup SF
Replace the backup PG
Replace the backup SG
Replace the third string PF
Replace the third string C

While at the same time tying to:

Get Ray signed
Get Rondo extended
Get Perk extended
Sign a first round pick

The year 2010 should be quite the year to follow the Boston Celtics. The trade deadline deals, the playoffs, the Championship, the parade, the draft and then all the free agent signings and deals that will probably have to go down to fill out the roster for 2011.

Jump on the rollercoaster now kiddies. It's going to be quite the ride!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bulpett, the guy who originally broke the story is still not confirming it is only a one year deal.

Sources told the Herald yesterday Daniels will sign for the bi-annual exception. The deal will begin at $1.99 million and can be for no more than two years.

Guess we will have to wait and see.

I think it depends on the economic climate next summer.  If things stay the same as this summer, it's quite possible Daniels does no better next summer than he did this summer.  Plus, I think teams might be learning from the whole Posey deal that while Posey can put a team right on the brink over the top, he can't make a team that's a first or second round playoff team a champion.

I'm pretty sure it's a one-year deal.

Not to rehash what has been talked about already but I'd just like to add now may be the time to add another wing via trade both as Daniels insurance as well as to eliminate a little uncertainty past next summer..

Jeez... that is why Ainge must cash in his expiring assets and fill some of these upcoming holes by this year's deadline. If not our beloved Celtics will be ultra thin in 2011.

I wonder if something like Walker, Giddens, 2011 1st rounder, Scal and TA could net Stephen Jackson? If so, he can:

- Fill some roles himself
- Be an valuable chip to trade next offseason.

Or... if Ainge can offer Scal and TA to a team with an 2011 expiring. Even if the player is garbage he could bring in assets from a team looking to shed payroll next summer.

I'm thinking out loud. ::)

Good breakdown Nick, I'm sure you'll notice a rise in your tommy-point count.

I am not going to worry about this stuff yet.  There are still plenty of things that can and will happen this year, both through trades, as well as development (if Walker or Giddens develops, it will be huge for this teams prospects next year).  And given the depth they already have locked up on the front line, I am not worried about them filling out the roster next year with just the MLE to throw around.

The other intriguing possibility, which I think people are going to have to take into consideration is that they may consider trading Perk at some point.  There is a good chance he will price himself out of an extension after next year, so they may look to see if they can get some value for him before he walks.  I doubt it will happen during the season, unless an offer they can't refuse presents itself, but next summer I think it will be a big topic of rumors to go along with the possible Rondo and Ray rumors which will consume Celtic Nation.
