The only fried snack for the true New Englander should be fried seafood :)

Fried Sea Scallops, (the big, tender ones, not the small, tough "Bay" scallops), are my favorite food! (TP) (I'm a native Maine-ah!)

Fried full belly clam or seas scallops.....mmmmmmm.

Off-topic, but yeah...  New Englanders who eat clam strips drive me crazy.  The only "right" way to eat a fried clam is full-belly.

I'm a big fan of fried oysters, too.  Pretty much give me anything in one of those "Fisherman's platters", and I'm down with it.

I knew I could get a Maine boy to back me up with my love of full belly clams. I just want to slap a New Englander who says they can only eat clam strips.

Funny story, when I went to school in Cleveland in the early 80's the food at the caf was just putrid. But then they decided they were having their annual Friday fried Clam day. Apparently it was a HUGE deal. So my room mate and I, both Bostonians, were psyched. Finally good sea food.

We got Howard Johnson's quality fried clam strips.

They place was going nutty. They love the stuff. My room mate and I are looking at them like "Ummmm, where's the rest of the clam." The people out there were clueless. They didn't know clams had bellies. They gobbled that stuff up like they had never had a meal before. Jay and I, my room mate, went back to the dorm hungry and disappointed.

There was a popular Howard Johnson's in Bowdoin (Maine) when I was growing up that served clam "strips" ... it became something of a problem with "locals" and they eventually changed the menu to offer a choice, even though they couldn't advertise such, as I assume it was against company policy. Clams without bellies are not clams.

Haha.  Good story.  My best friend -- from Framingham -- lives up here now, and his favorite food is clam strips.  It embarrasses the heck out of me when we order that in a local joint.

I like Clam strips but I am no New Englander,  I am willing to eat them in front of the peeps who said they'd slap peeps and my money is them on their backs in writhing pain doing the dying coachroach five secs after they tried to slap me.

That looks like some good eatin'.

Excellent! Hopefully KFC will have this, and I shall post a review (finally) this weekend.

I'm 140 right now, afterwards I expect to hit the 170 barrier.

This sandwich doesn't even look tasty. ::)

Ha, I think it looks delicious!  I've had it once and probably won't again.  The cheese, sauce, and chicken don't mix well all together.  It was weird to eat and tasted weird.

Words like that are not said cheaply where I am from.  Its like throwing down the gauntlet.  I think the world was a better place when you could bust someone in the head with impunity.  People were politer if they knew they would get hit for smarting off.   It was considered unmanly to press assault charges.  But that all changed around 90.   I came back from the service and it was more civilized but a lot ruder.. I think the same is true of the internet.  People are bold because they know they are safe.

So how is one supposed to eat them.  Explain this open shell crap?  I am willing to try new ways to eat clams but being a midwester from Appalachia (yep my kinfolk were Hatfields)I am ignorant of the proper way to eat clams.

Like this my friend:

Notice the darker almost blackish areas that you can see through the golden brown batter? That is the belly of the clam. It is soft and squishy and, IMHO, absolutely delicious.

Some of the best you can find will be sold in places along the Maine shore, especially the beach areas that all seem to have fried seafood places you can buy right off the beach in a take out form and eat right there.

Dude the conversation is about fried clams. I think assault charges are filed because people too wound up about life want to fight all the time over absolutely nothing.

Regarding the internet, you are right, but this is mild conversation. RELAX.

Those look good.

I am not your dude, Greenbean, but have picked a lot of them.  I just like the world 20 years ago better than today.

those look real tasty Nick and I completely agree, the bellies are absolutely delicious.  Once anyone has had a fried clam with the belly, no way can they go back to just strips.

Just had some last night at Blount's in Warren RI.  not bad but best I've had were at Flo's in Portsmouth RI and a hot dog shack in Rockport Mass.  all on the water (which seems to be a pre-requisite for good fried clams).  didn't find any good ones when vacationing in Maine a few years ago.

I've been meaning to try that sandwich for a while, I just can't ever get up the nerve. I Probably would have to save up some room in my stomach, or apply for some fancy new health insurance before attempting to eat that. Hopefully they're still selling it by then  :-\
