Some posters really dont know anything about basketball outside of Boston.
No way the Kings do this, Thompson is a stud.
Maybe you're not paying attention to the business side of the discussion. The Maloofs have been hemoraging money and the Kings revenue is way down. They have the worst arena in the NBA and no hope of winning anytime soon.
They seriously overpaid Udrih and he's absolutely untradable without giving up an important asset. They owe him 26.7million over the next 4 years and they just drafted and traded for 2 PGs. They also have an overload of swing players and Garcia is owed 23.2million over the next 4 years.
Make yourself aware of the financial argeuement before you tell me I don't know Thompson is a very interesting player. This is the rich taking advantage of the poor.
Im very aware of the Kings financial situation, and there is no way in Hell they do this.
Udrih is a badd badd contract, no doubt, but he isnt dead weight just yet. He isnt a bad player and I really think Paul Westphal can get him going a little bit. The kings were stupid to offer him that long deal, but at least its not a team killer. You can live with one bad 5-6 mil contract on your books for a few years especially if your deep within the rebuild like Sacramento.
The Kings finally have a good young PF ( a spot that has been haunting them since Cwebb left ) and there not going to trade him just to dump salary. He can be a special player. He can be Chris Webber.
Put this trade on any Kings board/ fansite and you'll see how fast it gets shot down.
One more note - Garcia is very underrated. On a better team he is a sixth man of the year type player, he is a good defender and can play 3 positions ( Pg, Sg, Sf ) and has a very good 3pt shot. And for how bad the Kings are he has hit some pretty clutch shots for them. He isnt someone they just want to dump. Nocioni will be traded before he is.
not interested in any Kings fan site (oxymoron) -- that's the point. no fan wants to dump talent they like over money. you're clearly in that category as well. you might not mind paying udrih 27mil when you have two preferred PGs on the roster, and you might not mind paying two roles guys who play the same position / game 6-7 mil a year for 4 more years, but the Maloofs do. and as for nocioni, of course they'd rather trade him over garcia, but in the current economic environment that is absolutely not happening. tell me a team that's willing to pay noce 7mil a year right now. answer: no one. so you have to make a choice for the future and deal with the hand you've dealt yourself.
i hear you on thompson. but this trade allows them to fight another day in free agency. not saying it's a slam dunk, but something has to give in sac. they're not just going to rebuild with what they've got and stay in arco and everything is going to be fine. they're headed down the sonics road right now and a solution has to be found.
Very interesting proposal and you make some solid points backing up your thought process.
Taking your points (and the counterpoints made by others) into consideration, I do like the deal for the C's from a talent perspective but I'm not sure the C's do it from a financial perspective. That's a lot of money tied up in bench players that may not get the court time to justify the salaries. Even though Ray's contract is up after this year, I figure Danny will try to sign him for 8-9 mill for a couple more years. Figure Rondo for a hefty contract raise next year as well as Perk getting a hefty contract raise in 2. The current expiring deals offer Danny the flexibility to take on new Rondo/Perk contracts while keeping Ray and PP happy with reasonable deals for the next couple of years.
Even though the incoming talent is better than what's going out (IMO) and Wyc has been willing to pay some luxury tax, taking on Udrih and Garcia's longer contracts and knowing that Thompson will need to be paid more money in a couple of years really throws the C's into a serious financial mess considering the contracts of the starters and Sheed.
thanks, and sure the cap and tax management element is a major issue. i'm presuming two things inherent in this proposal: 1) Wyc and Partners willingness to go Cuban for the sake of winning it all this year, and 2) that they and Ainge desire a plan to add some talent for the future now, and do not plan to allow the team to go past its prime with the Big Three.
We're heard Danny's comments about Red trading Bird, Kev and The Chief in the late 80s, and we've seen his business-oriented approach to negotiations (removing passion and loyalty from the equation). I for one do not see Danny paying Ray 8-9mil next summer unless we win Number 18 this year, in which case I still believe it's pretty far-fetched, particularly if Garcia were on the team. I see him making Ray a low offer to retire a Celtic, but letting him go if he gets big money; and looking to convince Paul to opt out / sign a reasonable long-term extension in order to assist their cap position. I admire Perk as much as anyone on this site, but I also fear greatly the health of his shoulder, so I'm not restricting any move based on the need to pay him in 2 years.
In short, assuming the current cap structure remains in place (a big assumption but for the sake of this discussion) it's a fair statement to suggest that the Celtics ownership group is prepared to be perenial lux tax payers if the team remains a championship contender. This is the reality of this structure -- even the Spurs are doing it now despite their relatively low revenue and low end TV market. Yes, Udrih's deal is tough, but plenty of healthy, successful teams carry one such overpaid contributor -- think Luke Walton, or Marcin Gortat now playing 10 minutes a game for the Magic (before he's traded in a couple or months), or Z making 12mil on the Cavs.
