Considering that years ago he was quite upfront about his supplement and over-the-counter habits back in the the DR, and how he was going about educating people, seems to me to be quite consistent with the story being told right now.
Yes, but he as much as admitted to using supplements with steroids, so is hard to admire his candor when he is clearly trying to nuance a very serious matter. He even admitted to receiving supplements by mail, so you don't do that unless you know what you are getting. Was frankly disappointed he did not include a more forthright apology.
Where did he "as much as admitted using supplements with steroids"? We don't even know what he tested positive for.
He did not say he used a supplement once. He said he used a variety of supplements. At the end of the video on espn he implies that this was not exclusively over the counter; but that "he had guys sending him stuff". Now maybe this was a poor choice of words; but the over riding sense was that he was admitting to using supplements at a time when it was common and when people perhaps did not want to know what was in these supplements - so how can he turn around and say that he "never used steroids" unless he was excluding the possibility that he could have used steroids found in supplements either with or without his knowledge. So I believe him if he is saying he never took injections or steroids in a pure form; but is kind of like when Bill Clinton said he never had "sex" with Monica Lewinsky (or like a coffee drinker saying they never took caffeine - ok that is an exaggeration).
Well, should I believe someone who says that they've never eaten horse crap in their life? Who knows what has actually been in everything you've eaten in your life... can you tell me all the ingredients of all the food you've injested?
Pure exaggeration, but it's the same principle. This was nothing new with Ortiz... some years ago he was talking about how he started educating himself from what he was buying over the counter and stuff. Do normal people really check just about every ingredient there is in something you're buying? And remember, back then there was no testing, so no one really had to care about every single thing that was in some supplement, particularly ones you can buy legally off the counter.
People are more educated now and more aware and practices have been changing. But again, this is nothing new with Ortiz... this supplement story is old.
Now with all that said, I have not read ANYWHERE, that Ortiz tested positive for steroids. He's simply in a list, and who knows what he tested positive for. From what I can see, he doesn't have a clue either.
Remember Andro, which Mark Maguire used? When was that, like in 1998... when did MLB finally decide to ban it? At around 2004. So, unless Ortiz really went out of his way to find some steroids, I could really care less about some possible supplement he might've taken back then when it probably was legal (again, old news), and maybe even not banned by the MLB. By the way, wasn't this test taken in 2003?

I think that speaks for itself.
