This blog post by Bruce Allen, and a comment in it by some guy named Jon sums up my feeling in this matter pretty much:

Thanks for that link.  More people need to read that.  I am so sick of Shaughnessy and Mazz, (two guys who know less about the celtics than most sportswriters in other cities) and their cheap shots.  WinEdited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.s.  They suck.

his new conference was believable. I'm proud he did it.

Considering that years ago he was quite upfront about his supplement and over-the-counter habits back in the the DR, and how he was going about educating people, seems to me to be quite consistent with the story being told right now.

The Red Sox's World Series victories should be stripped. What good are they if they cheated to win?

Considering that just about every MLB club would have to be considered as cheating, I don't see who would have the right to claim the title.

Yes, but he as much as admitted to using supplements with steroids, so is hard to admire his candor when he is clearly trying to nuance a very serious matter. He even admitted to receiving supplements by mail, so you don't do that unless you know what you are getting. Was frankly disappointed he did not include a more forthright apology.

Where did he "as much as admitted using supplements with steroids"? We don't even know what he tested positive for.

After thinking about this some I believe that this is MLB (Selig) trying to bring credibility to itself based on their cartoonish fraud of an investigation. ;D...Which predictably produced no Red Sox player.

I can't think of any other reason they'd stay out of these leaks completely without commenting unless they want the leaks to happen in the first place.

He did not say he used a supplement once. He said he used a variety of supplements. At the end of the video on espn he implies that this was not exclusively over the counter; but that "he had guys sending him stuff". Now maybe this was a poor choice of words; but the over riding sense was that he was admitting to using supplements at a time when it was common and when people perhaps did not want to know what was in these supplements - so how can he turn around and say that he "never used steroids" unless he was excluding the possibility that he could have used steroids found in supplements either with or without his knowledge. So I believe him if he is saying he never took injections or steroids in a pure form; but is kind of like when Bill Clinton said he never had "sex" with Monica Lewinsky (or like a coffee drinker saying they never took caffeine - ok that is an exaggeration).

And they haven't proved he took them in 04 and if his positive test was 100% accurate.

While we're at it we should strip every title from the last 20 years.

Exactly.  And then maybe we can go back to the 60s and 70s and strip all the championship teams that used "greenies".   ::)

These things were prevalent in ALL of baseball.  To just think the Red Sox championships are tainted is pretty ridiculous.

Well, should I believe someone who says that they've never eaten horse crap in their life? Who knows what has actually been in everything you've eaten in your life... can you tell me all the ingredients of all the food you've injested?

Pure exaggeration, but it's the same principle. This was nothing new with Ortiz... some years ago he was talking about how he started educating himself from what he was buying over the counter and stuff. Do normal people really check just about every ingredient there is in something you're buying? And remember, back then there was no testing, so no one really had to care about every single thing that was in some supplement, particularly ones you can buy legally off the counter.

People are more educated now and more aware and practices have been changing. But again, this is nothing new with Ortiz... this supplement story is old.

Now with all that said, I have not read ANYWHERE, that Ortiz tested positive for steroids. He's simply in a list, and who knows what he tested positive for. From what I can see, he doesn't have a clue either.

Remember Andro, which Mark Maguire used? When was that, like in 1998... when did MLB finally decide to ban it? At around 2004. So, unless Ortiz really went out of his way to find some steroids, I could really care less about some possible supplement he might've taken back then when it probably was legal (again, old news), and maybe even not banned by the MLB. By the way, wasn't this test taken in 2003?

Quote
"This past week, I've been really confused and frustrated," he said. "I started looking for answers, and nobody gives me an answer."

Quote
"His reputation has been called into question. He does not know specifically why. And he can't get the information that would allow him to offer a full explanation," Weiner said.

Quote
Under the rules of the 2003 testing, Weiner said "legally available nutritional supplements could trigger an initial 'positive' test under our program."

I think that speaks for itself.

This is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I have ever read on this blog. Did you really think this would elicit a positive response?

I think the news conference was fairly believable, but I guess we have believed a lot of guys when they said they didn't do steroids and then were caught later. Ortiz has always had such a high level of character under the Boston spotlight- maybe we just want to believe him.

Either way, hopefully this 'list' gets figured out at some point. Just prolonging it makes it much worse.
