Yes they can sue. This test wasnt just for steroids.  there were many legal substances that are tested for.  It was a list that was sealed by court order so whoever leaked these names is going against a court order and can be found accountable.

Can the players whose positive results were leaked from this "anonymous" test administered by Major League Baseball not sue the absolute crap out of the League for allowing these results to leak out?  This leak by the MLB has had a huge and lasting effects on all of these guys' reputation, even though they were told that the results were anonymous.  While they were "morally" wrong, steroids were not against MLB rules, and I have to think if I was one of these guys like A. Rod, Papi, Manny, I would fight back in court.

It was the Player's Association that didn't destroy the results, I believe, before the Feds seized them.  There's no way a player is going to sue his own union.

A player could potentially sue for breach of contract, I guess, but any damages for breach of a reputation that was based upon hiding illegal behavior aren't going to be worth much.

I'll say it again...

  • The good ole days.
So is Pujols now the only savior?  Could he be the only one who will dominate without juicing?

What makes you think he is clean?  Wasn't he the 402nd player taken in his draft class?

I mean, nobody other than maybe Greg Maddux is above suspicion in my eyes.

Well keeping it in Sox Nation here.... I highly doubt Tim Wakefield ever took anything except maybe some Chinese fingernail strengthening remedies.

Seems like a Boston fan acting like everyone did it so no biggie.

The 2004 Sox those loveable band of characters that came back from the depth of an insurmountable 3-0 ...  were FRAUDS

The Red Sox sold their souls to be the Yankees.

oh please.

the yankee's have just as many dopers, and so do any other teams that had superstars this era.

The whole era is tainted, no matter what team you root for. In some sick, macabre way, the fact that nearly every superstar has a cloud around them makes the era horribly even.

I still can't believe the Player's Union didn't destroy the results, so stupid....

Just did about 20 minutes of research and came up with this:

http://thesteroidera.blogspot.com/2006/08/list-of-steroid-hgh-users-in-baseball.html

the list of players who admit to taking, or have tested positive for PEDs, includes (best years in parentheses):

Bobby Estalella (2000 SFG 14 HR, 53 RBI, 3 SB .234 BA)
Armando Rios (2001 SFG-PIT 14 HR, 50 RBI, 3 SB, .260 BA)
Paxton Crawford, who never totaled more than 36 major league innings in a season
Shane Monahan (1998 SEA 4 HR, 28 RBI, 1 SB, .242 BA)
Jorge Piedra (2005 COL 6 HR, 16 RBI, 2 SB, .313 BA)
Yusaku Iriki (never played above AAA)
Ryan Jorgensen (2007 CIN 2 HR, 6 RBI, 0 SB, .200 BA)

NO!  NOT YUSAKU!!!!!

In addition, a guy named Tom House who never pitched after 1977 admitted taking them while he played! (from Wikipedia) "House has stated that "six or seven" pitchers on every major league staff in the 1970s were "fiddling" with steroids or human growth hormone"

So, there you have it.  Hitters, pitchers, Latinos, Americans, Asians, players from the '70s, '80s, '90s.  Take what you want from that list, I'm gonna assume anyone who says ANY player is above the cloud of suspicion doesn't know what they are talking about.

Isnt it illegal to give out information that is in a sealed court document though, and then also to pursue and distribute informtion in a sealed court document?  Can't these sources/reporters get in trouble?

Also, do we know if it was a officially a steroid or a horse growth hormone or something.  At this point couldent he have tested positive for something from a vitamin pack at GNC

They can be held in contempt of court, which generally isn't a very serious offense (usually resulting in fines).  The real fines add up when one party to a lawsuit also moves for its litigation expenses to be reimbursed as a result of the contempt, but here, neither Ortiz nor Ramirez are parties to the litigation.

Any attorneys who violated the Order may be able to be censured, if it could ever be proven.

Found out the news as I was about to go into Fenway Park before yesterday's game. (BTW, goosebumps when he hit that 3 run HR.  Great crowd response)

Tough one to take but I can't say that I'm overly surprised.  Just one of those cases where "just tell me it's not true".  It's not gonna change my views on anything that happened in the past.  I think the entire MLB was dirty and we, as fans, can either just accept that or can disregard that era.  It's a personal choice.  Sad news, though.  Papi's been one of my favorites.

This is definitly wishful thinking, but lets wait and find out what he took.  He said he is surprised he tested positive.  Im hoping thats because it was a supplement he took.     :-\
